Lets get specific about why the Reds apparently signed him. They seem to be paying for the notion that he will start from the #3 slot in the rotation. Initial reports certainly don't suggest that he was brought in for depth but rather he was brought in to fill a "need" they decided they had to fill (i.e. a lefty to break up all of the righties). It's classic create a round hole then jam a square peg into it....

In that light, appropriately critiquing the signing takes on a whole new tenor I think....

Would an all righty rotation represent a flawed roster? Probably. But why willingly make yourself worse by trying to cover a flaw? I prefer a rotation filled with the guys who have the best chance to succeed.

Is it fair to say that if he was brought in as a bull-pen guy then most people are happy with the move in light of (1) the state of the Reds bullpen and (2) the 1 year deal? Not a move to launch them into contention, but an incremental improvement type of move where you take innings away from a horrable pitcher and give them to a so-so pitcher.

Whereas if he's slotted to be a starter the enthusiasm for the deal goes way down.

I can't speak for the other Mod's - but the line here is getting pretty blurred, IMO.

Stay on topic and play nice.

I'm concerned with the direction of the thread - it's starting to sound like most threads around here.
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.

And the reds came out and said that?

    3) Same as #2, but regressing instead of improving?
While they're longshots for '08 IMHO, I think there are a lot of reasons to be excited as a Reds fan right now.

Anyone who thinks that a situational left-handed reliever being discussed as a potential starter is a good idea needs a reality check.

And anyone who can't read a simple warning from a moderator asking nicely to play nice doesn't deserve to continue discussions.

People, this is getting old. Go outside and have a snowball fight.
