What would it take to bring Reg Sanders here for a year to finish his career as a Red? Blast away, but we've been talking about adding a RHH OF off the bench and I think he could fill the role. If he wants too much cash, forget about it. But I wonder if there's interest on either side.

I've said I wanted an OF who could also play 1B in a pinch, but Sanders would be a good addition to this team IMO as long as the price tag isn't too crazy.

I don't think its a terrible idea if Sanders health allows it. The Reds RH OF are Hopper and Freel both of whom are table-setters/bottom of the order guys. Jeff Keppinger fits that mold as well. Somebody who can play 1B, LF and RF when Dunn, Griffey and Votto sit and can still fit in the 5th or 6th spot in the order would help out tremendously IMO. I'm not sure that Sanders is the right choice but since this is a reserve spot there won't be anyone who is. Kevin Mench might be an option but offers awful defense and hasn't played 1B, Ensberg can't play OF, etc. I'm just not sure there is a real good fit available.

A guy like Xavier Nady would be ideal if the Pirates are looking to dump him for a prospect to duck the arb case and open a spot for Steve Pearce. Pittsburgh offers some interesting possibilities as a trading partner. Not only are they are probably willing to move Nady, but Damaso Marte doesn't really fit in to the re-tooling plan and would easily be the top lefty in the Reds pen. The Reds could probably get both for nothing really painful to give up. Another possibility that seemed horrible a couple months ago might be to take Matt Morris off of Pittsburgh's hands. He's pricey, but probably a better bet in the rotation for 08 than anyone in the Bailey, Cueto, Maloney, Affeldt group and may have some salvage value at the deadline. The Reds might be able to get something else out of the Pirates simply for providing salary relief.

I was a little worried that I didn't see Matt Stairs on the list - thought he might have retired.

But the Jays re-upped him for two years in Nov.

Strike Ensberg off the list of blue-light specials. Rotoworld and MLBTradeRumors are both reporting that he has signed with the Yankees.

Another free-agent 1B-3B utility guy, Dallas McPherson, signed today the Marlins. Looks like he'll be competing with Jose Castillo and Jorge Cantu in a battle royale to replace Miguel Cabrera. Wonder if the Fish will catch lightning in a bottle or just a flickering ember?

I'm bummed about Ensberg. He's basically going to have the role with the Yankees I thought he would be perfectly suited for in Cincy.

Plus I would think he'd have more playing time here then he would in a Yankee uniform.
