Norris Hopper is not really that bad

I am willing to concede he will never be more than a fourth outfielder, and he should not start many games. However, he is hitting .313 in 195 at-bats. We will need a good bench next year, and Hopper is better than some of the bench players we had last year. He has a terrible OBP and absolutely no power, but he is the player I want coming off the bench in a pinch hitting situation. If the Reds are smart, they should make sure we have Hopper as a part of our bench next year.

He's not bad but Dunn, Hamilton, and Griffey are better. So I don't want to see him starting more games than he has to

There is always some one who will disagree. I have enough experience on this forum to realize that.

I think he would make a good 4th outfielder. A guy who can hit for contract, run, and play a little defense. I dont know what else you would expect from a 4th outfielder.

He is a really nice bench player, but I'm afraid the Reds may seem him as more then that.

On TV the other day, they posted Hopper's BA when his bunt hits are removed. I can't recall the exact number but it went down significantly. He's definitely not a power hitter, but a bunt single is still a single. He's the guy I trust the most when it comes to laying down a bunt to get a runner over.

    That argument is terrible....
Adam dunns average is .184 when not getting a homerun...

You cant take out on of the biggest things they do and just discount that as the only important part of their BA...

Do you realize out of the total number of times Dunn has come up to bat this year only 35% of the time does he get anything other than a Walk, K, or Homer..
That means 13 out of 20 times up he gets a strikeout walk or homer.. the other 7 times combine all the lineouts, foul outs, groundouts...

There is nothing wrong with Hopper coming off the bench and spot starting when someone needs a day off. I think you could do worse for a 4th outfielder. He gets on and plays hard

That is my opinion as well. Though, with the influx of talent we have in the outfield, I don't know how much future he has with the Reds. I see the Reds having and outfield with Dunn, Bruce, and Hamilton. I don't know if that leads to the Reds trading Griffey. Then Hopper would be a fourth outfielder. I don't think Griffey would settle for coming off the bench.

More Norris Hopper hate on the game thread tonight that I don't understand. Guy is hitting over .400 in August (over .320 overall), is 3-for-3 tonight, and there is someone in the game thread calling him his least favorite Reds' player. The Hopper hate makes no sense. Hopper has been as big an asset as any position player during the recent Reds hot streak. Not sure why bashing Hopper is STILL a popular move.

At 4-4 tonight, Hopper is now the most maligned .326 hitter in baseball history.

I think people do not like Hopper starting games because of his lack of power, but as he is our only outfielder who hits LHP, we can expect him to start against LHP.

Only so much singles can do for you. Either he needs to get a bunch faster or learn how to hit a double.
