[B]The unofficial non synthetic medicine thread[B]

Anyone else use herbal medicine for daily needs? I'm not talking about illegal drugs here either.

I use taurine daily for mental clarity and for liver cleansing. I don't drink ten Red bulls daily either lol. I use 100% natural taurine powder in a daily protein drink. I seriously suggest this product to anyone that has abused their liver over the years My liver is fine now but I had a problem earlier in life with liver inflammation from Rheumatoid arthritis and my MD said he believes Taurine has taken away the fat buildup in my liver from the arthritis and occasional drinking. He said that Taurine has been studied overseas for years and not only can stop further damage to the liver from alcohol or injury, but can also reverse effects of an abused liver. Taurine is also an amino acid that is regularly made in the body and has absolutely zero side effects at any reasonable dosage.

I also take pure magnesium and both B6 and B12 vitamins daily. I was advised by my doctor that these could help with stress and anxiety and I would agree 100% after using these for a month. I'm not a Scientoligist either I just prefer something a little more natural than a factory created synthetic medicine. I'm not too sure on the long term damage to the brain that could be caused by anti anxiety medicines. That's not even mentioning the fact I don't want to get addicted to a controlled substance even if it's legal.

Recently I was told by a friend that Kratom is a great product for stress. Has anyone ever heard of Kratom or used it and has any experience? From what I have gathered you drink it in tea and it's got a calming effect. I don't want to jump into something that is actually addicting or not thoroughly studied though.

Just thought this would be a good thread and hopefully it doesn't get locked if people use this as advice BEFORE speaking with a true MD. Hopefully I'm not coming across as Tom Cruise here and others use vitamins/ herbal products in their daily life.

Cool thread, Ced. I'm a fish and flax oil man, also some green tea extract and a basic daily multi for general health. I've used a few other things over time, but for more specific goals within a timeframe. I've heard of Kratom, pretty sure you're right on with what it's supposed to do, but I've never had experience with it myself.

I am diabetic. I take two cinnamon tablets daily. Before I started taking them my A1C number was 9.something and a month or two after taking them it had dropped to 7.3. I was skeptical when my wife told me about how she had read about how cinnamon acts like insulin but after seeing the results I am a believer.

My mother is taking herbal medicine to treat a tumor right now. It isn't getting better, and hasn't for about 3 months and I can do nothing to convince her of it.

I'll agree that they can help minor issues, but I'd suggest going to a real doctor for anything serious

I suggest speaking with a doctor before taking any OTC medicine. I posted that clearly.

My tone wasn't direct at you, I am just a little frustrated with my situation. I was just making a statement, sorry if you took it the wrong way.

I take salmon oil caplets for my ulcerative colitis. My mother is really big on herbs and "natural" remedies as ways to combat common everday health issues. A friend of hers is also into reflexology, iridology, and a couple of other methods. I think for the most part they are kind of cooky, but I do feel that some herbal treatments can be beneficial. Although they should not be used as alternatives to proper healthcare.

I love my mom because she always means well, but whenever I come down with something, like even a cold, she is giving me another bottle of herbs. I have a whole cupboard full of herbs for just about anything you can think of.

Not a problem at all. I was just echoing what you were saying.

Let me guess, "Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About"?

How do you even take you body's pH? I'd think it varies dependent on which body fluid you check and when you check it.

For the record, I think getting more vitamins and minerals is a good idea, though I like to get them via food sources rather than supplements. I really wish there was better information out there about nutritional science and non-synthetic medicine.

The problem is that these "natural medicines" are unregulated by the FDA.

The labels can claim anything they want to claim without any quality of evidence.

I could throw my grass clippings into a bottle and create my own ACME herbal cure.

I really want to believe that they have benefits but I don't even trust the vitamin companies.

    I take a multi-vitamin anyway. LOL

I'm not really sure. She claims that she doesn't ask, just lets them down what they do. Some of the things they do to assess (not sure if that is the right word) her is ridiculous, such as figuring out what is wrong with someone by looking at their handwriting or a photograph. I am naturally skeptical, but when my mom tells me that she will be fine because they touched her knee and discovered that the tumor is not cancerous - it just ticks me off even more.

I agree. When I was a teenager, my mom took me to this herbalist to help me with a few things. He claimed he could look into my eye and see what parts of my body were "weak." He determined what herbs I needed by having me hold a bottle of herbs in my hand and then extending my arm out. He then put downard pressure onto my arm and claimed he could tell if I needed that herb by the amount of resistance my arm gave. Really out there.

But, this guy still does this and you'd be surprised by what people pay for his services, and how many customers he has. Luckily, even though my mother buys into some of it, she still does not consider it as an alternative to proper healthcare.
