Reds Pitching -- Let's promote the prospects

Cueto threw 193 innings between A+/AA/AAA/Winter ball this year (struck out 207 guys too, just thought I'd throw that in there), in 2006 he threw 138 innings (not including winter ball because I can't find his stats), and in 2006 he threw 49 innings. Cueto has seen a steady in crease of work the last 3 years, and has made it through with no major arm injuries to speak of (knock on wood). Why would you bother taking him off his everyday schedule of pitching every 5th day that he has been working on the lst few years, and put him on a schedule of an irrartic work load? For example, Carlos Marmol threw 69.1 innings for the Cubs this year. Why would you waste the stretching out of Cueto's arm, and put him in the bullpen where he will throw fewer then 80 innings, on a schedule he isn't used to, only to throw him back on the 5th day schedule during the year or the year after?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

One of the most important aspects of an arm at Cueto's age is "stretching his arm out" to eventually become a starting pitcher capable of handling a starting pitcher's level innings. So far, that progression with Cueto has been just about perfect. Moving him to the pen would disrupt that considerably.

Agree with the premise. But Cueto has been pretty well stretched out the last couple of years (counting winterball) and threw 192 innings last year. A stint in the pen probably wouldn't hurt him as much as a guy like Bailey who has never really been stretched out.

I'd say absolutely not for Bailey, but Cueto and even Maloney might be ok there.

Unless he wins the spot over Volquez, I say bullpen or AAA for Cueto. The Reds shouldn't have more than 1 of Volquez, Cueto and Bailey in the rotation in 2008. Too many young guys that all need to be babied and if they are all there some one will have to be thrown to the wolves. I'd say Bailey in AAA rotation no matter what.

what about a pro-gression in mind-set like what we saw w/ Burton last year....

Again, he simply wasn't cutting it until Mackanin showed faith in him and begain using him in high pressure situation... its was has if Mackanin willed Burton to have faith in himself... and it may have made Burton's career...

I was speaking to the fact that he is a starter now and has always been a starter.
