Kevin Mench A Non-Roster Invite For Rangers?

    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...s.3a0c95c.html

The Rangers have discussed bringing OF Kevin Mench to camp on a non-roster invitation. Mench could contend with Jason Botts and Nelson Cruz to be a right-handed-hitting backup outfielder. ... RHP Sidney Ponson worked out for the Rangers this week and could end up with a non-roster invitation.
If that is the case then I think the Reds should jump on this.

    Agree.

I was a little annoyed Ensberg signed a minor league contract with the Yankees.
Why couldn't the Reds have signed him to the same deal?

Because the Yankees are a better team than the Reds are?

Absolutely. I'll take the Yankees lineup over the Reds and I think their pitching is going to be much improved this year.

I will bet you whatever amount of money you want that the Yankees finish the season with a better record than the Reds (in a tougher division and league).

I would hope so with a payroll $100M higher then the Reds.

If you were Ensberg and were offered the same deal from the Yankees, perenially in the hunt, and the Reds who haven't won anything in eons, which would you take? It's a shame because he would have been a good addition, but until we prove something to the world, we're going to lose that bet more times than not.

But he would have a better chance at making the roster in Cincy. Plus, if you do the right thing a jettison Castro, you could guarantee him a spot.

    We have 5 bench spots.

Assumimg Bruce makes the team, those spots are currently Valentin, Keppinger, Hatteberg, Hopper and Freel.

Have you ever seen a less powerful bench, especially against a lefty?

If yours is a true statement, they need to go with 11 pitchers and get another bat.

Castro knows how to play the game the right way......

So help me, I may explode if Mench signs a non guaranteed contract with anyone else. Offer him a major league spot NOW!

Count me as frustrated too. I really wanted the Reds to make a run at him.

Yankees now interested.. go figure.. per MLBTradeRumors.com -

According to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Yankees have interest in free agent Kevin Mench for a fifth outfielder role. It'd be a minor league deal. Additionally, the Rangers are considering bringing Mench back into the organization.

Mench, 30, has a .924 career OPS against lefties. He made $3.4MM last year.
