Paul Daugherty says Reds are seriously pursuing Joe Blanton

Just read this post on the Sun Deck:

Didn't see it listed elsewhere but FWIW--Paul Daugherty on WLW said about an hour ago his sources are telling him the Reds are seriously pursuing Joe Blanton.

I hope Krivsky is smart enough to not give up one of the fab five of Bailey, Bruce, Cueto, Volquez, or Votto for Blanton.

He would help, but I am also hoping that WK doesn't overpay for him.

I'm a Joe Blanton enthusiast but hopefully WayneK doesn't overpay for him if we land him.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

If it takes Cueto or Bailey to get Blanton, I would have just sent the Orioles Bruce to get Bedard.

    2008 ZiPS Projection:

    211 innings
    4.22 ERA
    228 H
    121 K
    52 BB

can anybody post Blanton's PECOTA projection? I could swear it was an ERA near 4.40...

Blanton isn't a bad pitcher at all, but he's not a great fit for us and is primed to cost more than he's worth. That said, Beane has shown he's willing to go for volume, so there might be an option here using guys like Juan Fransisco, Matt Maloney, and Tyler Pelland -- or something like that.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Blanton's weighted mean projection from PECOTA (nice memory, BC):

    187.1 IP
    4.40 ERA
    206 H
    110 K
    51 BB
    19 HR

Those numbers suggest a very Arroyo like performance with fewer K and fewer HR. Of course, those projections change with a move to the NL and to GABP.

    thanks

I'd rather just let the young guys attempt to replicate those numbers...

If the deal would require a top 5 guy, or two top 10s, me too.

Re: Paul Daugherty says Reds are seriously pursuing Joe Blanton

To be honest, I'm a bit scared that since Wayne failed to get any significant starting pitcher, he might overpay for Blanton. Wayne is the kind of guy that would feel good about paying $3 for Blanton instead of $4 for Bedard..

If we can get Blanton without giving up much, then fine.. However, he's not going to push us over the top, so I don't want Wayne selling the farm for him (I wouldn't have minded selling the farm for Haren).
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Can anyone really envision Beane accepting a package NOT including one of the big 4/5? I can't.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13, 15
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

I would trade Votto for Blanton if it means Dunn plays 1B.
