If necessary, I'd trade Votto for Blanton. Votto looks to me like a good lefty platoon first baseman with solid but not top power. Blanton is a very solid pitcher with a good contract and is worth Votto IMO.
I'd also consider trading Cueto for Blanton. Close call, but depends on Reds' internal scouting report on Cueto. A's apparently like Cueto.
I wouldn't trade Bailey or Bruce for Blanton.
I hope this rumor is true because I can't abide another year of "major league tryout camp" on the pitching staff.
Wouldn't be shocked if Belisle is a component of such a trade. Harang, Arroyo, Blanton, Volquez and either Affeldt or Bailey. Don't see room for Matt in that setting.
If the Cubs land Roberts, I'd lay up and go for par hoping that the young guys come up big rather than risking the water in an effort to go for the cup.... I think the Cubs are too far out front anyway but with Roberts, there is no way the Reds should be hoping 85 would be good enough this year. They need to be shooting for 90-92 wins and Blanton isn't going to be nearly enough of an upgrade over in-house to get the Reds there.

This is the blueprint for how a baseball organization should be run. And, whether the baseball men of the 20th century like it or not, this is where baseball is going."---Dave Cameron, U.S.S. Mariner
I just don't get it.....which is what most of you are already muttering about me.
Blanton looks to be what we all HOPE Belisle MIGHT become in 2008.
I would not give up Bruce or Votto necessarily, but I would start a deal with any of the young pitchers....one of them.
Blanton and Belisle as #3 and #4 (in interchangeable order) looks A LOT stronger than Belisle and any of the younger pitchers including Affeldt. The deal also leaves any one of the young pitchers as the fifth starter which is where almost any rookie pitcher belongs on the staff of a team that is going anywhere.
It may look better on the surface, but its not likely to get us to the playoffs this year and after this year I really like my chances of Bailey and Cueto being more valuable than Joe Blanton, especially in our park where allowing the ball in play so much really hurts you.
Blanton looks like another pitch-to-contact type. I detest low K/9 pitchers, especially when they're only slight groundballers. I certainly wouldn't want the Reds to give up real value for him.

Looks to me like Votto projects to somewhere around Brandon Phiilips type power. I don't trade Votto in a package unless it is for Bedard.
Agreed!
I would trade Bailey in a NY minute for Blanton.
Double and triple agreed!!!!!
I cannot see the point in trading Belisle for Blanton....seems like a bit of a push to me since I am hoping Belisle gives the Reds 2008 what Blanton gave the A's in 2007.

I'm thankful that Wayne Krivsky is the GM and not some of the folks on here. Homer Bailey for Joe Blanton? No thanks. IMO Bailey would put up similar numbers to Blanton in the GAB this year, and I definitely like Bailey's future better than Blanton's.
I like the idea of Blanton, he reminds me a bit of Harang. Decent fastball 91 to 93 to go along with three other pitches. I also like the fact that he knows how to keep the ball down. He is much better than anything else we have at the three spot. It really depends on who we would have to give up in order to get him. I am sure Beane will ask for Cueto or Bailey plus two others.
If you have a losing record at Reds games, please stop going.
Just what makes you think Bailey is going to pitch 230 innings, go 14-10 with a sub-4 era as a rookie?
If that happened, he would be a lock of ROY. I just didn't see that kind of dominance in what I watched last September. Bailey is still a two pitch pitcher, being asked to develop a change-up at the Major League level.....
Except for Hamilton (a trade you were in favor of), they have held on to all the kids.
Maybe the Reds are seriously pursuing Blanton, maybe they aren't. I'm not holding my breath. I remember earlier this offseason when there was a 75% chance we'd get Bedard...
