Reds sign Kent Mercker to a minor league deal

    per rotoworld.com

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds signed Kent Mercker to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training.

It was thought that the 40-year-old pitcher would retire after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2006, but ultimately decided he wanted to pitch again. He hasn't pitched since the surgery, and will struggle to make it to the majors this season.

Maybe he'll do some more dugout reporting. Hilarious interviews!
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

I'll rout for the guy .... as long as he doesn't end up blocking youngsters .. I don't see where added depth in the arm department hurts.

I think that this is a situation where someone wants to leave on his own terms to see if he is finished once and for all.
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.

Forget lefties...how many relievers does one team need?

Unbelievable how many "arms" have been acquired.

Wasn't his name in the Mitchell Report? One would think he'd have just disappeared to Murfield Village's golf course and let that bit of information die, rather than trudge out for another spring training w/ a limited chance of making the major league roster while having the local beat writers (as well as those covering other spring training teams) question you about your involvement and bring it back up in the papers.

Perhaps Kent's side of the story is a bit different, and this is the best route for him to get his side of the story out there???

Otherwise, he's supposed to be a good locker room guy and influence on the youngsters, so it may not hurt.

Maybe they can invite Jeff Shaw as well and hope the two make the team and carpool to the stadium.

Backup veteran suckage in case of an injury to Stanton . Maybe they think he can start.

Well maybe Shaw will give the Reds a hometown discount. Of course this is dependent on them reworking Wily Mo's contract to send him to the minors and open up space on the 40 man.

    Wait it isn't 2003 anymore?

There's nothing wrong with letting a guy like Mercker come down to Sarasota and "hang out" for a few weeks. In his heart of hearts he knows he's toast. Krivsky knows he's not going to make it but realizes Mercker can be a good influence or help teach a few guys a thing or two. Hardly costing the Reds a dime. Just per diem for two maybe three weeks.
