Plenty of time has passed for Bret to pass the urinalysis. Sosa redeux. (Except Sosa can still hit)
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

This thread is almost exactly like the Dmitri Young one from last year.

    Seriously...take a look at it.

You're probably right. Although one must ask, how many times is Jimbo going to draw a 2 when taking a card on 19?

    Agreed there.

Though he was working on a shoe-string budget last season, so it was hard to blame him. I think it was cut about 50%, IIRC.

I'm just shocked Bowden is still the GM.

I would have thought Stan Kasten would have canned him along time ago.

Fleecing the Yankees of Tyler Clippard helps.

As to Bowden's ex Red fetish...

DY was a good risk at least. It wasn't like his hitting skills had diminished, he just had some... issues. Krivsky takes a chance on a crack addict, genius. Bowden takes a chance on a substance abuser, one he has a history with, Bowden's an idiot.

This move however makes no sense other than letting a guy try to go out on his own terms while at the same time doing a favor for a friend (Bob) I doubt Bret makes it through ST.

    It's a nothing move.

My issues with Jim Bowden have more to do with his lack of character (IMO) and his inability to assemble a pitching staff than it does his seeming infatuation with ex-red reclamation projects.

I suspect you're right about the Bret Boone signing though. Give the little guy one more spring training with dad and brother.

Makes good copy if nothing else.

That's my thought regarding Bret. As to Bowden's character, he has none. His ability to assemble a pitching staff, well I give him an incomplete. He's been saddled with two terrible owners in Cincinnati, A FO that for a time didn't understand baseball at all (Allen), ownership by MLB that forced a low payroll on him. He's just now settling in with decent ownership and a new stadium. He's got a nice offense, a better bullpen than the Reds have, and an interesting mix of SP. I certainly wouldn't expect miracles, especially with what the Mets have done, but the Nats could finish as high as third this year.

The cynical side of me says that Bret needed to take a break from the game to give his "people' time to construct some really good undetectable designer s***.

When is the first time we're going to read about a "lighter, slimmer version of Bret Boone" and have him talk about how "he really worked hard to get into the best shape of his life."??

Who was the youngest Boone that JimBo acquired? Was it...Matt? Don't think he ever played above A ball.

My guess is that the Nats have a hard time winning 70 games this year.

Like Jim Bouton said, “You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.” It's likely Bret was feeling the grip and made the call to the only man who would not laugh him off the phone...because bottom feeding is possibly the only thing Bowden does well.

Perhaps Bowden is simply trying to relive the glory year which was 2003.
