    Javier Valentin overawed by Volquez

"He needs to work on his offspeed stuff," Valentin said. "It was his first day. maybe he was trying to impress... Put him in the bullpen or whatever."

Really a need for a post on this?

I mean heck, I bet Aaron Harang needs to work on his offspeed stuff right now.

Here is the complete quote from Fay's blog.

"He needs to work on his offspeed stuff," Valentin said. "It was his first day. maybe he was trying to impress. But he's a got a good arm. His fastball moves. He's a good real live arm. That's what you need. Put him in the bullpen or whatever."
    And from Dick Pole.

"I try not to get too excited about one bullpen session," Pole said. "But we've got some good arms. I was really impressed with the arm strength of (Johnny) Cueto, (Edinson) Volquez and (Josh) Roenicke. You can't teach a good fastball."

Dumb comment by Valentin, for this being Feb 19th.

Put him in the bullpen, or whatever?

The bullpen might very well be Volquez's final destination, but it's not for the 2nd string catcher to decide, publicly, on the 4th day of ST, is it?

I'm not too swayed about any comment regarding a pitcher's stuff the first day of camp. Besides, Valentin is a catcher who isn't very good behind the dish and a pinch hitter with a career .709 OPS. Shouldn't he be focused on justifying his own roster spot?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

last month, there was Cy Young talk.

    Now it's bullpen or whatever

FWIW, I think that he'll do well in the bullpen.

I think Volquez's ceiling is as one of the game's best #2 starters, but I think his floor is as an above-average reliever.

Yanno, if I was the manager, I'd be calling Javier into my office and peeling the paint for a stupid, idiotic comment like this.

Call Dan Wilson out of retirement to replace Valentin!

I'd be for that even without the stupid comment.
