    Bob Howsam has died

Heard it on 700wlw but heres the Fay blog entry

Bob Howsam, the architect of the Big Red Machine, has died.

Howsam was the Reds general manager from 1967 to 1978 and again from 1983-84. He also served at chief operating officer from 1973-78 and 1983-85.

Howsam, who retired to his native Colorado, was 89 years old.

He was responsible for building the team that won the 1975 and ’76 World Series.
Howsam came to the Reds after a stint as GM of the St. Louis Cardinals.

He hired Sparky Anderson in 1970. In 1972, Howsam made the big trade with the Houston Astros, getting Joe Morgan, Jack Billingham and Cesar Geronimo – three key components of the World Championship teams.

Howsam was elected to the Reds Hall of Fame in 2004.

That's very sad. He was a great baseball guy. He really knew what he was doing. It's a sad day in baseball.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

What a great baseball career he had. Wasn't he the GM in St. Louis when they traded for Lou Brock?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

    RIP,

I have the old Reds year books with him in the Red sports coat. That was his trademark.

    Thanks for the memories Bob.

They say these things come in threes. I sure hope this is an exception to that. Both Howsam and Nuxie will be greatly missed.

The Joe Morgan trade, was the last ingredient that was needed to make the Big Red Machine champions. Thank you Bob.

everyone always talks about Billie Beane and Theo Epstein....well Mr. Howsam was far better than both of them combined.
