If no one else picked him up then, yes, they clearly would be on the hook for any buyout. I'm not sure though what happens when a another picks up a player with a buyout.

AGAIN STOP CELEBRATING, NO NEED TO BEGIN IMAGINING STANTON BEING BROUGHT IN TO FACE DUNN LATE IN A GAME, WE'RE ONLY HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING HERE.

Anyways, if the the other team picks him up, do they pick up the same contract he signed with the Reds or do they write a new one? Meaning would the vesting option transfer over to the team he signs with?
I'm sorry, I was too busy celebrating. What was your question again?

If the Reds outright cut Stanton right now - which they should do - then they would owe him his $3 million salary for 2008 plus his 2009 buyout of $500k. The terms of that contract would then be satisfied in full and Stanton would be a free agent.

If some other team such as the Cardinals were stupid enough to sign Stanton, then they would write a new contract for their agreed upon terms.

    That makes sense.

What happens to the vesting clause? It just goes away b/c the Reds didn't use him enough to vest?

I'm still not entirely convinced that we don't risk having to be stuck with a 2009 year minus the major league minimum. I understand the logic of the other side of the argument, but I still have some doubt regarding the question.

Yup, it's not guaranteed money unless he hits that appearances mark while playing under his current contract. Right now the guaranteed money going to Stanton is the $3 mil for 2008 and the $500k buyout for 2009.

If the Reds cut Stanton right now, they'd pay him his guaranteed money ($3.5 mil, including 2009 buyout) and immediately cut all ties with him. If Stanton ever plays baseball again, then he would become his new team's problem for 2009.

I think that's how it works if he passes through waivers.

I'm pretty sure that if another team claims him off waivers then they would be on the hook for the buyout and the option and the Reds would be out his 2008 salary less the major league minimum.

I guess the Scott Spiezio situation pretty well shows us that we'd be on the hook for 2008 plus the 2009 buyout.

The 35-year-old Spiezio was entering the final season of a two-year, $4.5 million contract. He was released the same way most players are cut, for failure "to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability."

That means the Cardinals owe him this year's $2.3 million salary plus a $100,000 buyout of a $2.5 million team option for 2009 -- because of that, the likelihood of a grievance by the players' union is small.
