Jewish School Team Faces Replacement Over Championship on Sabbath

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,333352,00.html

If the jewish rule is sun up till sun down on Saturday, why not play it after sun down? What time is it dark? 7pm mountian time?

If this is the championship game it should be the last game. Why can't they just move the time back a couple of hours?

These kids deserve to play, if they make it to the championship game. I know you can't accommodate everybody, but moving the game until dark should not be to big of a problem.

This is a big deal right now here in CO. I don't know why they can't accomodate them.

"well if we accomodate them, we have to accomodate everyone.."

    pfffffftt...

If it was for something other than a religious observance, I suppose I would agree - but it seems fairly rediculous that a league can't work around a couple of hours so everyone can be happy.

I could not agree more here. Move the game back a few hours. Pretty simple.

Though- did the team not know the game was scheduled during the time period before the season started?

There are two sides to every story, but this seems to have a simple solution that doesn't appear to favor anybody as far as competitive advantage.

I don't think teams look at the playoff dates when the season starts. They should absolutly change the start time of the game for this team. Personally I am not Jewish but I would give this kids a heck of a lot of credit if they don't move the game back and they don't play.

Maybe send this stroy to the Hoosiers about how to protest for a worthy cause instead of backing you rule breaking coach.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you have a belief system that prohibits you from playing at certain times, you might want to make sure the championship game isn't during that time. If you didn't look, then your partially responsible here.

Having said that, it doesn't seem like it's asking too much move the game time to accomodate religious views.

I can almost guarantee that the other team doesn't want to win the state championship like this. It doesn't make any sense not move the game back a little bit.

So did the Jewish team win yesterday? Or is this now a moot point?

The NCAA works with BYU in every sport to make sure its teams don't have to play on Sundays. Seems like the high school organization could do the same for this Jewish school.

Checked out Rocky Mountain News. They won 68-39, so it looks like the showdown is on.

What if January 1st, falls on a Sunday and their football team has a bowl bid? They won't move a bowl would they? The NCAA does not have any control over this do they?

I'm old-school on this topic as well. If you're going to stand up for your beliefs, then don't ask for changes to accomodate you. However, here's my litmus test...

Do the high schools in Colorado, as a policy or practice, offer students public lunches including fish on Fridays during Lent?

If Colorado high schools are doing that, then they need to push back the start time of the championship game.

I believe your citing an older article as I'm pretty sure they lost by 3 on Friday making it a non issue.

Also the schedule had been known since November according to local news reports.
