    Jay Bruce vs. Colby Rasmus

I ran across this article and found it interesting...thought maybe you would too.

"Sometimes, it's not the sexiest moves that put you over the top," Krivsky said. "It's a series of transactions that help you get there."

I like our guy better because of his power, it isnt Dunn or Howard type power but pretty close.

Give me Bruce. Rasmus is going to be a great player but Bruce will be a superstar.

The advantages that Rasmus has over Bruce at this stage of their careers is that he's a true CF (and likely to be able to stay there for his career) and has much better plate discipline.

Those are two pretty big advantages.

If Bruce is going to be the better player, he will have to outslug him by more than a marginal amount, something that is quite conceivable.

I expect Bruce's plate discipline to improve. He has said that he knows he needs to work on it and I suspect he will. I think Rasmus will be a .300/.380/520 type hitter whereas I see Bruce being a .325/.385/570+ type hitter and maybe better than that once his plate discipline improves and pitchers begin to pitch around him more.

"PECOTA rates Bruce's possible upside as significantly higher than Rasmus'".

I want to see how Rasmus plays in CF this year. He put on significant weight this offseason as he bulked up. Its difficult for players to keep their great speed after adding 15 pounds to their frame. I know he made big strides last year in his defensive abilities, so I can't wait to see if he kept things going or if he has slowed a step or so.

good read. I'll always go with the better bat ... which in this case projects to be Bruce.

It's interesting that PECOTA sees Dee Brown as a comp for both players
    Ouch!

Is the implication (as reflected by projections) that PECOTA, figuratively, views plate discipline as marginally more "learnable" than power?

PECOTA projections would say that. Reading the 2008 BA prospect book you would be surprised how many players they project to develop "above average power" with natural growth. I'm guessing that PECOTA projections are based on the theory that Bruce and Rasmus are pretty polished prospects.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.
