That was better than I expected. Would've been pretty funny if he actually drew the walk.

I was impressed. How embarrassing for Maholm if he walked him. After that strike 2 cutter to bring it full that Crystal couldn't hit, you knew he was coming back with it. I'm pretty sure that's a lot better than I would. Of course, I strike out in slow pitch softball.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I was even more impressed that he actually took 3 balls.

I'd have K'd on 3 pitches, no doubt about it.

It would've been hard to resist the urge to swing at anything.

He's getting one at bat in his lifetime for his beloved Yankees.

I don't think he went up there to work a walk.

    Swing away, Billy.

He played baseball in college, so it's not like he's clueless. I know college for him was a good 4 decades ago, but still, I think you still have an idea of how it works.

The question is, can he play SS? The Reds can use one.

I just saw it on tv. He really didn't look bad at all, especially for a 60 year old.

He actually never played in college. He was on a baseball scholarship at Marshall but his freshman year the program was suspended and he didn't return to Marshall after that (NYU)

but he did hit .384 as a senior in HS

oh man...what would have happened if he drew the walk? or if he'd gotten a hit? or better, yet, what if he doubled?

i think it just might have screwed with Maholm's head enough (if Crystal had doubled or homered or even tripled) to screw him up for much of the early season.

What a mockery of the game.

I wonder if ESPiN and the rest of the national media would have been equally as giddy over this had he been batting for a small market club against the Yankees/Red Sox?

    OBP...

    Crystal: .000
    Gaedel: 1.000

Billy, you are no Eddie Gaedel. Your OBP comes up short. You will always have to look up to Eddie.
