    Andy Marte

Could he be Brandon Phillips part deux?

Former top flight infield prospect came up in the NL East, traded to the Indians for a very nice big league return, never could quite put it together in Cleveland.

He's still quite young (24), bats righty, and at worst could be the serviceable platoon/backup guy at 1B and 3B, especially with Keppinger promoted out of that role and slated to start at SS. I'd take a chance if Cleveland DFA's him, which it appears they might just do...

That would be a nice move, imho. I would love to see the Reds acquire Marte.

Marte has always seemed like one of those guys who was an 'early bloomer'. His game was always very mature but he didn't improve nearly as quickly as his age would have suggested. Guys who were lesser players than him as a 19 year old have zoomed past him.

That said, if he can be acquired on the cheap, he is certainly worth a look.

seeing as he is a 1b/3b and with EE and Votto around it is hard to see how he would get a chance to develop with the Reds. When BP came to Cincy he had a reasonable chance for PT, I don't see the opportunity with Marte. If someone is going to take a chance they need to be able to get him some PT.

Seems like a natural fit for a team like San Francisco.

He could be a right-handed compliment to Votto and a very serviceable backup at either corner if needed. He's also been playing some OF this spring. Who knows? If he really blossoms, I'm sure we could find ways to get him at-bats, rotating between four positions- much like Freel/Keppinger have in the past. If he comes on like Phillips or Hamilton, he may provide a nice insurance policy in case Jr. and Dunn both bolt after this year.

All I'm saying is that I would definitely take a flier on him if he were available for very cheap. If I'm Wayne, I'd be more focused on collecting talent first, and finding a place for them to play later.
