    Blake Johnson

Fay said that he got a tip that this would be the PTBNL in the Salmon deal. Good frame but don't know much about him. He was in High A last year.

    Re: Blake Johnson

I got a tip today that the talk around the Kansas City Royals camp was that Blake Johnson is the player-to-be-named in the Brad Salmon trade.

Johnson fits profile of the kind of player the Reds would want for Salmon. Johnson is a 22-year-old right-hander. He went 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA last year for Wilmington of the Carolina League.

He was the Dodgers’ second-round pick in 2004. The Royals got him as part of a trade for Elmer Dessens in 2006. Wayne Krivsky wouldn’t give many clues about the PTBNL, only saying it would not be someone on the Opening Day 25-man roster.

The Reds have been trying to stockpile arms. A 22-year-old who’s been successful in High A would be nice to add.

Pretty nice size, and pretty nice last 10 games stats.
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

    Re: Blake Johnson

Blake Johnson was the Royals 14th overall prospect this year in the Baseball America Prospect Handbook. Here's some interesting tidbits I gleamed from reading his scouting report

--Fastball velocity improved as his delivery improved (91 mph to 94 mph)
--mid 70s curveball with good downward bite
--improving changeup with late sink and good arm action
--inconsistent with command and struggles when he becomes too reliant on his curveball
    --Ready for AA

Nice pickup for Brad Salmon (who I hope succeeds in KC) if Fay is correct.

    Re: Blake Johnson

That's a very good pickup for Salmon. Salmon was reaching his short window, without much of a chance to live up to his potential here. I'd love to see him succeed in KC, because it wasn't likely he would be given much of a shot here. This is a good case of a GM trading performance now to help make sure the bullpen is good down the road.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

    Re: Blake Johnson

MLB.com had mentioned Johnson as one of Kansas City's top ten prospects to watch out for in 2008:

    Blake Johnson, RHP
The former second-round pick also came over from the Dodgers in the Dessens deal and he, too, completed the Advanced-A trifecta while pitching last season in Wilmington. He distinguished himself much more in the Carolina League than he had in either the Cal or Florida State Leagues the previous year, going 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA in 26 games (22 starts). He won his last six decisions (10 starts) and had a 1.28 ERA over his final 56 1/3 innings.

Despite a nice low-90s fastball -- he also has a decent curveball and changeup -- Johnson won't strike out many. But he gets hitters out and finished strongly last year. Good things are expected of him in the Texas League this season.
If you have a losing record at Reds games, please stop going.
