Edwin Jackson has been a huge bust to this point in his career but he's still only 24 years old and throws in the mid 90's with a great slider. So yeah, I'd trade Ryan Freel for him. If he has options remaining then I'd send him to Louisville and let him work on being a reliever down there.
I don't believe he has options left - and if he did then he wouldn't be trade bait most likely. The guy has been an enormous bust to this point. Last year's Reds might've been served well to take a flier on him but not this year's team.
I just looked it up. Jackson is out of options.
Freel's not a long-term solution for the Reds, whereas Jackson could be.
It would be a low expectation move, while addressing the log-jam. I look at this at a potential win-win.
You can't teach the stuff that Jackson has. Put him in the bullpen and have Pole work with him.

I'd give Freel's contract to Tampa. Adding a low cost/stuff-oozing arm to the pen would be gravy.
Tampa could have Bay on the next flight to Florida if they decided they wanted him.
Murton/Willits/Nady probably are the guys they'd actually "target".
Freel probably isn't high on Tampa's list.

Matt Belisle is a piece of crap and yet we should pursue Edwin Jackson. I'm not sure I follow... I'd trade Freel for him only if he took Stanton's place in the pen.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Maybe you're right. We already have one of those: Homer Bailey.
And that's not a cheap shot at Homer. It's an honest observation. I just caught myself up to speed on Edwin Jackson, and I still think he's a low risk, high reward type arm, but not to expect miracles immediately. Maybe Freel might be a bit too much to pay for Jackson, but I still wouldn't mind getting Jackson.
Bottomline, I'd like to see the Reds trade away surplus in order to obtain more pitching. Hopefully along the way they actually obtain some quality pitching.
That sounds amazingly like Homer Bailey.

Jackson is fastball/hard slider with little to no offspeed.
Bailey is fastball, big curve, developing change, embryonic slider.
They're quite different in terms of repertoire.
Edwin Jackson never put up the H/9 or K/9 rates that Bailey put up in the minors.

That's why I think he'll never be anything as a slider. However with his mid 90's heat, and if he can control his 83-85 MPH slider he could be an effective bullpen pitcher.
I'd rather have Freel. Jackson wouldn't make the team.
