    "Connections" Trivia Question

Haven't done this in quite a while...

Kent Mercker connects to Hank Aaron with one link. That is, Mercker was a teammate of Darrell Evans, and Evans was a teammate of Hank Aaron.

So, what current Red can be connected to Lefty Gomez using only three links?

    Re: "Connections" Trivia Question

I think it is Mike Stanton.

Lefty Gomez was with Washington with Early Wynn (1) in '43.
Wynn was a 1963 Cleveland Indian teammate of Tommy John (2).
Tommy John was a 1989 teammate of Randy Velardi (3) with the Yankees.
Velardi and Stanton were 2001 Yankee teammates.

    Is that right?

EDIT: replace Velardi with Hal Morris in '89, and he was a 2000 teammate of Junior.
Replace John in '89 with John in '88 and you have Jay Buhner, who was a long time teammate of Junior.

I'm not counting Stanton as a current Red...the Griffey one works. I had:

Dave Weathers- Dave Parker- Vic Davalillo- Early Wynn- Lefty Gomez

Oh, yeah...I forgot about that happy memory.
I had considered Davalillo, as well (since he was young, played a while, and played for many teams).

    Re: "Connections" Trivia Question

Can anyone do Scott Hatteberg to Frank Robinson in three connections or less? If you want a hint, think of a couple of recent, left-handed, ex-Reds relievers.

Scott Hatteberg - Mike Greenwell - Rick Cerrone - Frank Robinson

How about this one, in only four steps:

Hatteberg- McGee- Jim Kaat- Elmer Valo- Al Simmons (!)

Wow, and you both avoided Rheal Cormier and Mike Stanton. Good job.

    Re: "Connections" Trivia Question

    Merker-Darrell Evens-Hoyt Wilhelm-Max Lanier-Joe Stripp-Dolph Loque/Eppa Rixey/Carl Mays/Wally Pipp

    (Merker-Evans-Wilhelm-Lanier-Stripp-Pipp-Ruth/Gehrig)
(Merker-Evans-Whilhelm-Lanier-Stripp-Loque-Johnny Evers-Bobby Lowe-Pop Hines: That was as close as I could get Merker to the beginnings of organized baseball)

EDIT: ok...it is a few steps, but: Junior-Jeff Leonard-Al Downing- Yogi-Dickey-Stan Coveleski-Eddie Plank-Bones Ely-Decon White-The Wright Brothers. Instead of six degrees, we have seven. I am sure someone can narrow that down, though.

    Weathers-Parker-Davalillo-Wynn-Ossie Bluege-Nick Altrock-Dummy Hoy-John Morrill-George Wright.

Hopefully when I'm an old man I'll be able to tack Jay Bruce onto that connection and gain 15-18 more seasons...
