Cueto is the first pitcher since 1900 to strikeout 18 and not walk a batter

Johnny Cueto is the first pitcher since 1900 to strikeout at least 18 batters in his first two starts and not walk a batter. Wow. That puts it in perspective to just how amazing he has really been in those first two starts. 13.1 innings, only six hits (one should have an error), three runs, no walks, and 18 strikeouts. What a special pitcher this kid is going to be. Keep him healthy and he's got a chance to go where no Reds pitcher has gone before - Cy Young award winner. And to think the Reds signed him for 3,500 dollars. I'd say that is the steal of the century.

Hardy said both of his singles off Cueto broke his bats.

"I saw a little bit of his performance his first outing and I was a little bit intimidated by the way he was throwing," Hardy said. "He has really good stuff."

Never underestimate the value of a pitcher who can locate his heat.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Well said. His location is phenomenal. I'll wait to go nuts over him until he's been through the league a few times, but man, he looks straight filthy out there. Never been more excited about a Reds pitcher.

Wow. Cueto might be one of those rare cases where a guy actually outperforms the hype.

One consolation last night, at least Cueto was not tagged with a loss.

I will write a check for $3500 right now for the Reds to go out and sign another one just like him.

I don't know the name of the scout that discovered Cueto, but if I ever run into him I am going to buy him a beer ..................... scratch that make it a keg.

What is the record for most innings at the start of a career without issuing a walk?
But that 18/0 K/W ration is unreal.

Did he make any other notable signings for the Reds either out of the Dominican or elsewhere? (no snark, honest question)

That is an impressive stat. Just thinking back on the sheer number of guys to pitch in the last 108 years. Astounding. he's the kind of guy that could keep it up too. Bring on the Cy Youngs.
