I happened to look up Baseball Reference and scan the Reds' statistics through ten games this season and see how we rank against the rest of the National League. The results are surprising.
Runs scored: 4.8 per game (8th)
HR: 11 (tied for 4th with Hou and Chi)
BB: 51 (1st, 5 more than 2nd place StL)
K: 54 (5th fewest)
BA: .252 (10th, but only 2 points below league average)
OBP: .350 (3rd) (League is .325)
Corey Patterson is fourth in the league with a .722 slugging percentage
Ken Griffey Jr. and Patterson are tied for 5th with 8 runs scored
Patterson is tied for third with 26 total bases
Adam Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion are 1st (11) and 2nd (10) in walks
Ken Griffey Jr. is tied for third with 8 walks
Patterson is second in the lead with 8 extra-base hits
All of this to say that if you really look at it, our offense isn't all that bad. It might be a little slow right now, but I don't expect that to continue. We're going to have an exciting season following the Reds, let's enjoy it!
