I know they were one year after expansion - but seriously, that is a horrible lineup. Looking at that, their roster and their pitching staff, I find it remarkable the Mets actually managed to win 51 that season.

I think this can be best represented with some smilies:

Weathers was historically horrible in that first short stint.

Interesting that Nuxhall went in the game in relief. I wonder what the circumstances behind this was?

Prior to the mid-70's, it was not uncommon for a starting pitcher to occasionally pitch in relief between starts, on his "throwing day". Joe Nuxhall had the best season of his career in 1963, going 15-8 with a career-best 2.61 ERA and a career-high 169 K's in 35 appearances (29 starts and 6 in relief). He threw 217.1 innings (the second-highest total of his career), and sported a 1.07 WHIP. He pitched 14 complete games, including 2 shutouts. He also recorded 2 saves.

Were those the days of the Crazy Crab, a.k.a., The Most Hated Mascot In The History Of The Known Universe? Or did the CC not make his first appearance until the next year?

The Crab came along in '84. That was a serious "What were they thinking?" moment.
I thought it looked like a tic hooked on Fruit Loops.
