    Tiger Woods has knee surgery

2 days after the Masters Tiger had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out at least a month.

Tiger Woods had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday to repair cartilage damange, his second operation in five years on the same knee. He is expected to miss at least a month while he recovers.

    Missing Out

Tiger Woods is expected to return from arthroscopic knee surgery in time to play the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Here's what he could miss along the way:

Upcoming PGA Tour Schedule Date Event Starts Wins Last Played
    4/17-20 Verizon Heritage 1 0 '99
    4/24-27 EDS Byron Nelson Classic 9 1 '05
    5/1-4 Wachovia Championship 3 1 '07
    5/8-11 The Players Championship 11 1 '07
    5/15-18 AT&T Classic 1 1 '98
    5/22-25 Crowne Plaza Invitational 1 0 '97
    5/29-6/1 The Memorial Tournament 10 3 '07
6/5-8 Stanford St. Jude Champ 0 0 Never
    *U.S. Open starts June 12

The surgery, announced on his Web site, came two days after Woods finished three shots behind Trevor Immelman in the Masters. He likely will miss The Players Championship, but should return in time to play the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

"I made the decision to deal with the pain and schedule the surgery for after the Masters," Woods said. "The upside is that I have been through this process before and know how to handle it. I look forward to working through the rehabilitation process and getting back to action as quickly as I can."

The surgery was performed in Park City, Utah, by Thomas Rosenberg, who also operated on Woods' left knee in December 2002. Woods also had surgery in 1994 on his left knee to remove a benign tumor.

Swing coach Hank Haney told the AP in phone interview he knew Woods' knee was bothering him, but was not aware of the surgery until Woods called him.

"He's been having a lot of trouble," Haney said. "He doesn't talk about stuff like that. He doesn't want to use excuses, you know? I don't think it affected his play. It affected his practice a little bit. He hit 14 greens in regulation on Sunday. Hard to say it was the knee."

Woods gave no indication his knee was bothering him the first three months of the season, when he won his first four tournaments to extend a winning streak that dated to September.

"Tiger has been experiencing pain in his knee since the middle of last year, and when he had it looked at by his doctors, arthoscopic surgery was recommended," said Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent at IMG. "Tiger has played through the pain in the past, but knew it would be better for him to have the procedure done as early as possible."

Steinberg said the surgery repaired cartilage damage. The 2002 surgery drained fluid from around the anterior cruciate ligament and removed a benign cyst.

Woods won the Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship in consecutive weeks in August, the latter his 13th career major. After tying for second at the Deutsche Bank Championship to Phil Mickelson, he wound the final two events to capture the FedEx Cup, won his unofficial Target World Challenge in December, and won his first four events until tying for fifth at Doral last month.

During the final two events of the PGA Tour season -- the BMW Championship in Chicago and the Tour Championship -- Woods occasionally would press his foot against a cooler on the tee box and stretch his knee.

He also stumbled behind the eighth green at Southern Hills during the final round of the PGA Championship, right after he chipped in for birdie and was backing up to throw a fist pump.

Otherwise, there were no other outward signs he was hurting.

"He's been cautious with it working out," Haney said. "He just needed to go in there and clean it out."

The recovery is expected to be four to six weeks, meaning Woods will not be able to defend his title May 1 in the Wachovia Championship. He likely will miss The Players Championship, one of three non-majors he has never missed since turning pro.

"Of course, we're disappointed when Tiger is unable to compete in a PGA Tour event," commissioner Tim Finchem said on the tour's Web site. "There is really never a good time for an athlete -- especially one of Tiger's caliber -- to take weeks off from competition during the season. But his health concerns have to come first."

Woods missed two months the last time he had surgery, but most of that was around the holiday and he only missed one tournament. This will be the second time in two years that he has sat out more than a month between the Masters and the U.S. Open. He missed nine weeks when his father died of cancer in 2006, returned to the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and missed the cut.

Assuming the recovery goes as planned, Woods probably will return at the Memorial two weeks before the U.S. Open. Despite his runner-up finish at the Masters, he will be a heavy favorite at the second major. Woods has won six times at Torrey Pines, including the last three years.

The last time Woods had knee surgery, he won three of his first four tournaments, starting with the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.

"This is something he's already used to," Haney said. "He deals with stuff incredibly, like you would expect him to."

Stinks he's going to miss The Player's. That's one of my favorite tournaments. Must be serious if he's doing it now instead of waiting until the fall when the season is over. It was his last surgery when he went through his "slump" back a few years ago.

Not sure why he would say winning a grand slam would be easy if he's nursing an injury.

Imagine what he would have done on two good pegs.

I wonder if he would have had the surgery if he had won the Masters.

1st thought that popped into my head was "is he having this surgery b/c he didn't win The Masters"? I hate to admit it, but that was my thought.

I also question if he would have the surgery had he won the green jacket this year.

Tiger showed a weakness in this year's Masters by not changing his strategy during the tourney. We've all heard if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but Tiger's strategy wasn't working and needed to be fixed. He never made the tweaks necessary, and Sunday had a cold putter.

I predict he'll make it and it will be his 1st tourney back. He, of course, has a ton of respect for Jack and has won this thing a few times. It definitely is his kind of course and I bet he wins it this year.

Buckeye...I hope you are right...I have had the privilage of attending the Memorial the past few years thanks to a friend at the Columbus Zoo and I admit to being one of the shameless horde that tails Tiger's every move. Way I figure it; you only have so many chances to see "the great ones", so I took it.

Me too. I have the good fortune to have in-law's that live on the course and it's a treat to be able to take my youngster out and let them get a quick look at Tiger as he walks by every year. The kids only have about 5 minutes before they get restless so it has been a blessing to be able to get them out there real quick as he comes by.

Whenever my 4-year old sees him on TV, she talks about watching him play golf in Nana's backyard.

Yeah, I don't think it's a cynical question, just an interesting one. He wins the Masters and has to make a decision: Does he get the surgery and get back just in time for the Open without hardly any tournaments to warm up or does he play through the injury and not risk getting rusty?

I had two trains of logic with my thought.

    1. He isn't injured, he isn't having surgery, yet he's saying he's having surgery for his knee after not winning The Masters after he spoke candidly about the Grand Slam. I wasn't happy the thought came into my head, but it did. The only problem with this thought is that if he's having the surgery, he'll be photographed on crutches and what not with his knee bandaged, so that will squash my "he might not be injured" thought.

    2. B/c he didn't win The Masters, he wants to get his knee taken care of before the US Open, due to the fact it's at Torrey Pines and he should dominate that venue. I would target The Memorial as his 1st tourney post surgery, but I think that's exactly 5 weeks from his surgery (today).

    --------

Last time he came into a US Open rusty (Winged Foot), he didn't make the cut. So take that as you will.

Tiger is going to miss the Memorial this year. Looks like the US Open will be his first tournament back.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=3410061

Tiger Woods decided Friday not to play in the Memorial as he recovers from knee surgery, meaning he likely will go to the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines without having played a tournament in two months.

Woods, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee April 15, was hopeful of playing before the U.S. Open. His office notified the PGA Tour that he would not enter the Memorial, a tour official said.

This is the second time in three years that Woods has had a two-month layoff before a major championship. He missed nine weeks in 2006 while coping with the death of his father, returning to the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and missing the cut for the only time in a major.
