    POW

Valaika and Wood sweep the FSL player/pitcher of the week awards.

    Florida State League
    Chris Valaika, Sarasota
    .480 (12-25), 6 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB, 4 SO, 0 SB, .920 SLG
Valaika's lone walk of the week came on Saturday -- just his fifth of the season and first since April 16. You can't fault the shortstop, though, because why would he take pitches if he's hitting as well as he is. It's been that kind of span for Valaika, who's hit safely in every game this week to extend his streak to 13 games. Valaika began the week on the best possible note, as the DH was a perfect 5-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored. He added two more multi-hit games and two more home runs, so if Sarasota can't seem to win a game, you can hardly blame Valaika. All 16 of Valaika's extra-base hits and all five walks this season have come during night games.

    Florida State League
    Travis Wood, Sarasota
    2-0, 1.39 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 13.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 9 SO
Wood could very easily have won this honor after his first two starts of the season, in which he struck out 13 over 9 2/3 scoreless innings for a win and a no-decision. While he has been overshadowed by Tampa's Eric Hacker, the southpaw would not be denied this week, winning both his starts. On Monday, Wood allowed two runs over six innings as Sarasota smacked Dunedin, 9-2, with Offensive Player of the Week Chris Valaika providing the offense. With much less support Sunday, Wood still prevailed, throwing seven scoreless innings in Sarasota's 2-1 win over Palm Beach. Owner of a 2.05 ERA for the season, the southpaw has been predictably dominant against left-handed hitters, who are managing a mere .188 against him.

How's Wood's velocity this year? Is he back up into the lower 90's or is he still stuck in the mid-80's?
Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one, and they don't want someone else's shoved into their face.

It seems like it depends on the outting. I have had reports on him working 89-92 on two different occasions. Then the guys at Saber-Scouting had him in the 86-88 MPH range. One thing to note about that though, the game started at 1030 in the morning, which could have had something to do with it.
