Let's see. So far in AAA he has pitched nine innings. Zero runs, five hits, eight Ks, no walks.
I've seen him called a trick pitch artist, not a real prospect, etc. But he has been a remarkable reliever in the minor leagues. And he's still young, only 23 until October.
This young man must have something going on.
He'll get his shot, but I see no room in the pen for him with Cincy until probably September (barring some injuries). Bray would be next in line and even he may not see the big league club again for a while.
The kid is showing he has what some people like to refer to as skillz (with a Z).
DRay has dusted Pedro Viola as the next LH reliever in line after Bray, and I'm not sure he won't pass Bray.
Danny's really fun to watch. He pitched an inning in last night's game against the tides and looked great.
Honestly, he looks like a little leaguer out there and and its a trip to watch him sit between 65 and 75 on the gun. But, the kid gets it done.
Hell, lets bring him up and see what he can do against the big boys. I think opposing hitters would have a migraine just thinking about facing Volquez for seven innings, then DRay for the eighth, followed by Cordero.
The best that can probably ever be expected from Danny Herrera is for him to be a LOOGY that has moderate success for a year or so until the league sees his act a few times.

Definitely wouldn't want to overexpose him, you're right. But pitching is about disrupting timing, and facing his slow-and-slower stuff with unusual movement would be about like facing a knuckleballer in terms of the contrast between him and what hitters are used to seeing. Could work for awhile.

The Astros had a reliever in the early 90's by the name of Doug Jones. He had three speeds. Slow. Slower. And really, really slow. He had a couple of big years for the 'Stros. I have no idea how he pulled it off. The ball seemed to float up to the plate. It brought back memories of Bugs Bunny slowball, on which three batters struck out on one pitch. Looney Tunes = good times.
supposedly the separation he gets is close to 20 mph from his fastball(which supposedly tops out at 83-84, which IIRC, Jones pitched at 85-87 with his fastball)

20 MPH is a sick differential. I bet he can fool batters with his stuff. I'm pretty intrigued by the kid too.
I'm a stats guy. I like what I'm seeing (reading) out of this kid. Not a bad "throw-in" in the trade at all. If the kid has pinpoint control like it sounds like, he will be able to make it on the MLB level.
Calvin Medlock was a screwball pitcher with great numbers and the Reds ignored him. I don't see why Herrera would be different. I was really surprised when the Reds took him in the trade, even if it was a throw in.
