The top reasons for the Reds poor start

As we all know the 2008 Reds are pretty bad. Team ERA of 4.52 ( tied for 12th/16 ). 146 runs scored (12th). Yet there are quite a few Reds having nice seasons - Votto & Bako are OPSing over .900, Phillips has an OPS of .807 to go with his stellar glovework, Harang and Volquez has been very good, even the middle relievers have been ok. So why the 14-21 start?
    IMO:

    Reason #1 - Arroyo.
I didn't expect the 2006 version but would have been happy with the 2007 version. ie 200 innings with a sub 4.5 ERA. Instead after seven starts he has an ERA of 8.63, a whip of 1.95, and a BAA of .360.
The Reds have lost 5 of his 7 starts.

    Reason #2 - Fogg/Belisle.
Fogg has an ERA of 9.27, a whip of 1.66, and a BAA of .312.
Belisle has an ERA of 6.91, a whip of 1.88, and a BAA of .373
The Reds have lost four of their six starts.
Even a 1-2-3 of Harang-Volquez-Cueto can't create a winner if the #4 & #5 starters are this awful. Not bad but really awful.

    Reason #3 - Griffey ( sorry Jr fans ).
In a run producing position he has an OPS of .695.
The rest of the regulars: Bako .927, Votto .945, Phillips .807, Kep .728,
    EE .851, Dunn .805 {despite the slow start}, Patterson .681/Freel .709.

    Reason #4 - No bench.
This one is more open to competition ( ie lineup construction, centerfielder, defense, etc ). However the Reds bench is ugly.
Hopper OPS .561, Javy OPS .499, Ross OPS .481, Hat OPS .435.
The only bright spot if Hairston OPS .884.
    .

are these in order? if so, i'd push reason #3 to the top and title it "the 3-4-5 hitters falling short"

I think the sum of our defensive ineptitude is a pretty major problem (and at the same time makes the pitching look a lot worse than it really should be). Other than Phillips, Bako and sometimes Patterson, that blame can go basically full circle around the team.

But Dunn's recent hitting and his high walk rate has pushed his OPS over .800

EE and Phillips are also over .800

Jr is the only one of the 'middle of the lineup' hitters with such a low OPS.
