    Jays DFA Gustavo Chacin

Blue Jays DFA'd 27 y.o. LHP Gustavo Chacin today.
He's a young lefty starter and had a pretty nice season in '05 but has not approached that level of success the last 2 years.

I'm curious about why the Jays cut him loose? Does anyone know if he's damaged goods?

If not, is he the kind of guy that might benefit from a move to the NL and could he be a cheap LH starter option for Walt to look at? I'm not one to advocate the Reds chase after every broken-down, rag arm reject/retread cast off by another team, but Chacin would seem on the surface to be a different case. Thoughts?

I think I read that his shoulder was bothering him.

    Minors Career:
    ERA 4.14 WHIP1.46

    Majors Career:
    ERA 4.18 WHIP1.381

Not great but not bad either. I guess I wouldnt oppose the Reds giving him a look.

Going to a weaker hitting league, in a weak division, he could be line for some improvement in his numbers. As a lefty number 5 starter to replace the fodder currently in the 5 hole in the rotation, that could be a pretty good pickup. Assuming he's healthy I'd bring him in on a one year deal.

I would have no problems with him taking Fogg's spot. I think that having a lefty in the rotation could really benefit this team.

    Did some research:

2006 - limited to 17 games due to left elbow strain
2007 - didn't pitch after April due to shoulder soreness and had surgery to repair a "slight" rotator cuff tear in August.

    Definitely has some injury issues.
Could be a low risk - high reward if he can put the injuries behind him and return to earlier form. I found info on 1 rehab start he had in Single A in April, but it was a mixed bag. I'd try to sign him to a minor league deal and see if he can return to form. It sure would be nice to have lefty in the starting rotation at some point.

he has one to many shoulder issues to suit me. Im sure some team will take a flyer on him but i hope we don't. He did have sucess in 2005 but it's been all down hill since then.

I looked into it some more as well.

In 6 starts with the Blue Jays SINGLE A squad Chacin was 0-4 with a 7.00 ERA in 27 innings.

If hes that bad in single A I would have dumped him too. The Reds should stay far away.

Thanks for the extra research on his season so far.......I agree, sounds like the shoulder is kablooie. Not worth messing with.

He's fat and wears glasses. That's 2 strikes against him.

He could be 10-0 with a 2.00 ERA, but the fact that he's fat and sports the lenses makes him a bad fit for the Reds.
