Re: Tracking Adam Dunn on the All-Time Career Home Run List

Adam Dunn hit his 257th career homer on Saturday and his 258th on Sunday. He is now all alone in 170th place on the all-time career list of the greatest home run hitters the game has ever seen. Not bad for a 28 year old, eh?

Unfortunately neither of Adam’s weekend homers allowed him to catch anybody on the list. He had been tied at 256 homers with Vada Pinson, Bob Allison, Larry Parrish and Alfonso Soriano, but since nobody had 257 or 258 homers he was not able to move beyond 170th place.

Next up on the list is Magglio Ordonez with 259 home runs. Ordonez of course is an active player with the Tigers so it is possible he could hit another homer before Dunn to keep his lead. Ordonez already has 12 homers this season and is one of the best hitters in baseball. Update: Ordonez was placed on the DL today, so Dunn should be able to pass him while he is on the shelf. Dunn just passed Alfonso Soriano while he was on the DL too. Maybe the active guys just ahead of Dunn on the list should be a little extra careful to avoid the "Here comes Dunn" curse.

Dunn’s homer #257 on Saturday came off Cleveland Indians pitcher Paul Byrd. It was his first career homer vs. Byrd in 16 plate appearances. Byrd is the 182nd different pitcher that Dunn has homered against.

Adam Bomb #257, Dunn rounds the bases after taking Byrd deep:

Dunn’s homer #258 on Sunday came off Cleveland Indians pitcher Rick Bauer. It was his first career homer vs. Bauer in 1 plate appearance. Bauer is the 183rd different pitcher Dunn has homered against.

Adam Bomb #258, Dunn gets his revenge for the two beanings earlier in the game:

Adam has now hit 10 career home runs against the Indians, including four at Jacob’s field. Dunn has hit 5 homers against the Indians just this season in only 6 games!

Dunn is now tied with Ryan Braun for 5th place in the majors with 20 home runs this season.

Adam leads the Reds in HRs, RBIs, BBs, OBP, SLG, OPS and is 3rd in Runs scored despite being only 5th in ABs.

Dunn is currently on a pace for the following stats this season:
    40 Home Runs
    96 RBI
    84 Runs
    130 Walks
    .224 BA
    .388 OBP
    .508 SLG
    .896 OPS

Players that Adam Dunn has passed on the career home run list this season:
256 Vada Pinson, Bob Allison, Larry Parrish, Alfonso Soriano
255 Kirk Gibson, John Mayberry, John Olerud
253 Larry Doby (HOF), Joe Gordon, Andre Thornton, Todd Zeile
252 Joe Torre, Brett Boone, Bobby Murcer
251 Robin Yount (HOF), Cy Williams, Tony Armas
    249 Jose Valentin
248 Goose Goslin (HOF), Ted Simmons, Derrek Lee
    247 Vern Stephens, Matt Stairs
    246 Ken Singleton
    245 Mickey Tettleton, Deron Johnson
244 Hack Wilson (HOF), Lou Whitaker, Tony Clark
242 Dusty Baker, Roy Campanella (HOF), Wally Berger, Sal Bando
241 Jesse Barfield, Cecil Cooper, Rick Monday
240 Roberto Clemente (HOF), Jeff Burroughs
    239 Ken Caminiti, Dolph Camilli
238 Ray Lankford, Earl Averill (HOF)

    (HOF) = Hall of Fame

Adam Dunn has passed 42 players including 7 Hall of Famers this season.

    Bonus Dunn image:

Dunn smashes the catcher in the second inning of Sunday’s game. Was it an accident that Dunn got hit by pitches twice later in the game? I think not. Dunn got his revenge by crushing a three-run blast later in the game.

Since I didn't have any biographies of past players to include in this update, I will post Dunn's career ranks in all the major stats in another post. Not only is Dunn passing people with nearly every homer, he is also blowing past some great players in the other categories too.

Re: Tracking Adam Dunn on the All-Time Career Home Run List

Here are Adam Dunn's career ranks in just about every statistic. He is not only moving up the home run charts very quickly, he is also reaching some very respectable levels in most of the other stats too.

Keep in mind he is only 28 years old, so he has many seasons of productive baseball ahead of him. He may reach Hall of Fame territory in most of these stats, but not all of them -- batting average first and foremost.

Dunn is the second-youngest player in the rankings for almost every stat. Guess who is the younger guy ahead of him on the charts ... of course it is Albert Pujols. Pujols is only two months younger than Dunn, but he reached the majors four months earlier and has also had 700 more at-bats than Dunn. That is a whole season's worth of added opportunities for Pujols over Dunn. It doesn't really matter though because we all know Albert Pujols is a super-duper-megastar. Dunn is merely a star. Pujols will make the Hall of Fame easily, while Dunn is a longshot.

Mark Teixeira is six months younger than Dunn, but Dunn is way ahead of him in most stats although Teixeira is slightly ahead in a couple categories. Teixeira has about 450 fewer ABs than Dunn.

Miguel Cabrera is the young guy that poses a threat to Dunn. Cabrera is already ahead of Dunn in a couple of stats even though he is still only 25 years old. He reached the majors at the age of 20 and already has just 600 fewer ABs than Adam Dunn despite being three years younger.

I have assembled Dunn's rankings amongst all the players in MLB history, as well as comparing him to only active players. I separated out the counting stats from the ratios and sabermetric stats.

There have been a total of 16,766 players in MLB history.

    #19 in OBP with .3812 - Next up David Ortiz w/ .3821

Re: Tracking Adam Dunn on the All-Time Career Home Run List

Adam Dunn hit his 259th career home run on Wednesday. He is now tied with Magglio Ordonez for 169th place in major league history.

Next up on the list are Javy Lopez and Tim Wallach with 260 home runs.

Dunn’s homer #259 on Wednesday came off Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher John Van Benschoten. It was his first career homer vs. Van Benschoten in 1 plate appearance. Van Benschoten is the 184th different pitcher that Dunn has homered against. It was the 26th time Dunn has homered against the Pirates, which is the 3rd most against any team in his career. He has hit 36 against the Cubs and 29 against the Brewers.

Magglio Ordonez - Current Age: 34 Career HR: 259 Career AB: 5600 AB/HR: 21.6 Top Season: 38 HRs

Ordonez has played 12 seasons with the White Sox and now the Tigers. He has made the All Star team 6 times and led the AL in batting average with a mark of .363 in 2007 while placing 2nd in the MVP voting behind Alex Rodriguez. Ordonez was the first Tiger to win a batting title in 46 years. Ordóñez hits the ball with authority to all fields. He has good strike-zone judgment and a short, quick stroke. He pulls the ball against left-handed pitchers but with opposite-field power against right-handers. As a fielder, he has a decent arm, a quick release and good accuracy. Ordonez is currently on the disabled list, so Dunn should be able to stay ahead of him. Ordonez has 12 homers so far this year compared to Dunn’s 21.

Players that Adam Dunn has passed on the career home run list this season:
    259 Magglio Ordonez
256 Vada Pinson, Bob Allison, Larry Parrish, Alfonso Soriano
255 Kirk Gibson, John Mayberry, John Olerud

Re: Tracking Adam Dunn on the All-Time Career Home Run List

Adam Dunn hit his 260th career home run on Sunday. He is now tied with Javy Lopez and Tim Wallach for 167th place in major league history.

Next up on the list is Danny Tartabull with 262 home runs. Nobody currently has 261 homers, so Dunn won’t catch anyone with his next one.

Dunn’s homer #260 on Sunday came in Dunn’s second plate appearance against Washington Nationals pitcher Collin Balester, a 22 year old rookie throwing in his second major league game. He was like raw meat in front of a pit bull. The home run was a game-tying 3-run blast deep into the bullpen in right field. Balester is the 185th different pitcher that Dunn has homered against.

Adam Bomb #260, Dunn, barely visible in his desert camouflage, watches his line drive sail over the wall:

Here are some bios for the former great players that Dunn caught today:

Javy Lopez - Played Until Age: 36 Career HR: 260 Career AB: 5319 AB/HR: 20.5 Top Season: 43 HRs

Lopez was a catcher who played 15 seasons mostly with the Braves but also a few years with the Orioles and Red Sox. He made the All Star team 3 times and was the 2003 NL Comeback Player of the Year. Not bad for a guy that wasn’t even drafted. He is from Puerto Rico, so I believe he was eligible for the draft but wasn’t chosen. In 2003 he hit 43 homers to set the single-season record for catchers and he did it in only 129 games.

Tim Wallach - Played Until Age: 39 Career HR: 260 Career AB: 8099 AB/HR: 31.2 Top Season: 28 HRs

Wallach played 17 seasons mostly with the Expos but also a few years with the Dodgers and Angels. He made the All Star team 5 times. Wallach played much of his career in Montreal alongside Tim Raines, Gary Carter, Hubie Brooks, Andres Galarraga and Andre Dawson after taking over at 3B from Larry Parrish (whom Dunn passed in homers a couple weeks ago). He was an excellent 3rd baseman and won three Gold Glove awards. Wallach won the Golden Spikes award as the best college player in the country while playing at Cal State Fullerton. Wallach attended the same high school as Garret Atkins and Will Ferrell.

Adam Dunn - Current Age: 28 Career HR: 260 Career AB: 3622 AB/HR: 13.93 Top Season: 46 HRs

Dunn is on a pace for 40 homers, 94 RBIs, 79 Runs, 122 BBs, .386 OBP, .515 SLG and .901 OPS for the season. Dunn leads the Reds in HRs, BBs, OBP, SLG and OPS. Dunn is second behind Phillips in runs scored and RBIs despite being only 5th in at-bats and 3rd in plate appearances. Dunn has the 22nd-best OPS in the major leagues.

Here are the top 10 in HRs in 2008 in the major leagues.

    24 Utley
    23 Howard, Uggla
22 Dunn, Berkman, Sizemore, A. Gonzalez
    21 Braun, Burrell, H. Ramirez

9 of the 10 are in the National League.

Players that Adam Dunn has passed on the career home run list this season:

    259 Magglio Ordonez
256 Vada Pinson, Bob Allison, Larry Parrish, Alfonso Soriano

Re: Tracking Adam Dunn on the All-Time Career Home Run List

I have been away from Redszone for a few days due to a family emergency. While I was away Adam Dunn hit 4 home runs, so I have some catching up to do in keeping this thread up to date. I will cover all four homers in this post.

Adam Dunn has now hit 264 career home runs. He is tied with Bobby Thomson for 165th place in major league history. Dunn also passed Danny Tartabull this week.

Next up on the list are Garret Anderson and George Bell with 265 home runs.

Dunn’s homer #261 came against Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano. That was the 7th home run Dunn has hit against Zambrano, which is the most he has hit against any pitcher. He has hit 6 against both Kevin Millwood and Glendon Rusch.

Homer #262 came against the Cubs’ Jon Lieber and was the 4th homer Dunn has hit off Lieber in his career. The blast traveled out of Wrigley Field and bounced off a building on the other side of Sheffield Avenue, took a huge bounce (off a padded bicycle seat) and almost came back into the stadium. It was one of the hardest hit balls I have ever seen. The shot was officially measured at 485 feet and is the longest home run hit in the major leagues this season.

Adam Bomb #263 came against the Brewer’s Seth McClung and was a 3-run blast in the first inning. It was his first homer off McClung, who became the 186th pitcher that Dunn has homered against. Later in that same game Eric Gagne became Dunn’s 187th victim when Adam hit #264 in the top of the 9th inning to put the Reds ahead 5-2. It was the 21st time Adam has hit 2 home runs in one game. Dunn has now hit 31 homers against the Brewers, which is the second most against any team. He has 38 against the Cubs.

Here is Adam Bomb #264 against Gagne:

Here are some bios for the former great players that Dunn caught with the four dingers:

Danny Tartabull - Played Until Age: 34 Career HR: 262 Career AB: 5011 AB/HR: 19.1 Top Season: 34 HRs

Tartabull was a right fielder who played 14 seasons with the Mariners, Royals, Yankees, Athletics, White Sox and Phillies. He made the All Star team 1 time. Tartabull was an all-or-nothing type of hitter with great power and poor contact rate. He hit 34 homers in 1987, the second highest total in Royals history. After signing a free agent deal with the Yankees he was one of the five highest-paid players in baseball. Tartabull’s injury-plagued tenure in New York came to an end when he was replaced by Bernie Williams and was traded to the A’s for Ruben Sierra. His father Jose played in the majors for nine years in the 1960’s. During Danny’s time with the Yankees he appeared in two episodes of Seinfeld.

Bobby Thomson - Played Until Age: 36 Career HR: 264 Career AB: 6305 AB/HR: 23.9 Top Season: 32 HRs

Thomson played 15 seasons mostly with the New York Giants but also a few years with the Milwaukee Braves, Cubs, Red Sox and Orioles. He made the All Star team 3 times. He was an outfielder. Thomson became a celebrity for hitting a game-winning home run in a playoff game, off of Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca, to win the 1951 National League pennant. The home run (nicknamed the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" and seen in the picture above) is perhaps the most famous in baseball history.

Rumors that the 1951 Giants stole signs en route to the pennant were confirmed in 2001, when several players told the Wall Street Journal that beginning on July 20, 1951, the team used a telescope and buzzer wire to steal the finger signals of opposing catchers careless enough to not protect their signs.[1] Joshua Prager detailed the revelations in a book titled The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca and The Shot Heard Round the World. Giant catcher Sal Yvars told Prager that he relayed to Thomson the stolen sign for Branca's fastball. But Thomson denied that he had foreknowledge of the pitch he hit off Branca for the pennant-winning home run.

This event was even more dramatic than it may seem to the modern sports observer, as league pennants were not routinely decided by playoff until 1969 and only occurred in years in which teams finished the regular season in a tie, as had happened in 1951. The home run was an exclamation point on a dramatic season for the Giants. Although some had considered them a pre-season favorite to win the pennant, they faltered badly in the early going. By mid-August, they were 13 1/2 games behind the league-leading Dodgers. But the Giants went on a late-season tear, winning 37 of their final 44 games to tie the Brooklyn team on the final day of the season and force the three-game playoff. The teams split the first two games, forcing the decisive contest on October 3rd at the Polo Grounds. The Dodgers took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Giants' cause appeared lost. But Thomson's homer turned what looked like a certain defeat into a 5-4 victory. The moment was immortalized by the famous call of Giants play-by-play announcer Russ Hodges who cried, "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" Waiting to hit behind Thomson in the on deck circle was a young man who would hit a few home runs of his own: rookie Willie Mays. A key to the 1951 pennant was Thomson's switch to third base, allowing Willie Mays to take over centerfield.

Thomson remained with the Giants through the 1953 season. That winter, he was sent to the Milwaukee Braves in a multi-player deal. His career intersected with another of the game's all-time greats in 1954. During his first spring training with the Braves, he suffered a broken ankle. The injury allowed rookie Hank Aaron, the future home run king, to earn a place in the Milwaukee lineup.

The Braves traded Thomson back to the Giants during the 1957 season, and he was in the lineup for the club's final game at the Polo Grounds. The Giants moved to San Francisco for the 1958 season, but Thomson was gone, traded to the Cubs.

Thomson was born in Scotland and his family migrated to the United States when he was two years old. He served during WWII in the Army Air Force.

Adam Dunn - Current Age: 28 Career HR: 264 Career AB: 3644 AB/HR: 13.80 Top Season: 46 HRs

Dunn has the 18th-best OPS in all of baseball and is 20th in RBIs.

I really hope Dunn can pass Tony Perez this year. It's highly unlikely that he won't but this will probably be his last year as a Red so I'd like to see him as high on that list as possible. I wish Cincy embraced Dunn like they should. Dunn should be a career Red.

Re: Tracking Adam Dunn on the All-Time Career Home Run List

This is probably the best thread on the site going right now. Sitting at the Brewers/Reds game last Saturday night, it would just be wrong to see Dunn in a uniform other than the Reds. I am pretty neutral on the enitre Dunn argument, but it just wouldn't be right to see him in another uniform. How cool would it be to see him make a run at 300, 400, 500 in a Reds uniform?
