60 Million containers of Deadly Pet food Recalled

    Holy cow!

This put my little kitty in the hospital for close to a week.

We thought it was an allergic reaction to his medicine, but lo and behold, it was his food.

If there's a class-action suit, I'm joining it. Cost me close to $1500 to get him back to health.

I like how they say that there isn't a problem with their food that they can find, yet they are going to spend $25 million recalling it.

It really p****** me off, because I was just a mess last week worrying about the little guy, no to mention time off of work and the money spent.

Honestly, it was just an awful, awful time.

All of our cats were acting goofy, and before the kidney failure started, my mom and I had a conversation about how our cats no longer liked that style of food.

They were all taking a few bites and then dropping it on the floor. They also were throwing up, so we switched foods.

Then my smallest one couldn't hold his urine, and he lost half his body weight in a matter of days.

Wow Dom that sucks, glad he's getting better.

I'd be ticked beyond belief if that happened to one of my cats.

Keep your vet bills and if possible the contaminated food.
You'll probably be entitled to some compensation.

We kept about 70 containers of the food because we bought a few weeks supply. We considered taking it back for a refund since they wouldn't eat it.

I have all the vet bills, too.

He had to have a kidney scan because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. I was like a $1300 tab just for that and the hospital stay. Plus we had other vet visits.

And then I find out they are also recalling Iams, which is what we switched to, though ours doesn't match the lot numbers, thank goodness.

Wow, sorry to hear that Dom. Glad the little guy is doing better.

And thanks for posting this. I feed my cats Iams food but luckily only the dry stuff.

Sorry to hear about your anguish, Dom, but I am glad your beloved pet is going to be okay. This story about the bad pet food sucks. I hope you get your money back.

Speaking of Iams, it was founded by a Buckeye and still headquartered in the Dayton area...

The Iams Company was named for its founder, Paul Iams, the son of a Dayton animal feed store owner. Iams graduated from The Ohio State University in 1938, and with few job prospects because of the Great Depression, he returned from college and went to work for his father. He peddled his father's inexpensive dog food to area kennels and veterinary clinics, but Iams became convinced that dog owners would pay more for a better product. Iams left his father's business to work selling soap for Procter & Gamble, then served four years in the Navy. After the war, Iams made plans to manufacture a high quality dog food. He founded the Iams Company in 1946, and came out with its first premium dog food in 1950.

    Dom,
We had a client who had several dogs become sick from tainted dog food when I was in vet school. Once the dust settled, the company bent over backwards to compensate the owner. I know it is difficult, but be patient. It will take some time for toxicologists to figure out what is causing the problem (likely a mycotoxin from mold). In the mean time, good luck to you and your cats. If you have any questions, I can try to answer them for you.

Thanks everybody for being so kind. He's an exotic cat- a savannah, if anybody is intersting in looking them up online, he's gorgeous (at the vet, it was weird to have them say, "First of all, this is a beautiful animal..." before they would give me worse and worse news lol).

We have 4 cats and they are like our kids. The one that got really sick is only a year old and full grown he weighs about 5 lbs. Just a little squirt.

He has had an incredibly rough life and we were battling a very rare disease with experimental medicine when the kidney failure hit.

Though the medicine was experimental, there was never any sign of kidney failure on other cats who had been taking the medicine.

I took him to the vet yesterday and they basically old me that if if our little guy (Tyson, named after the boxer because he bites our ears in our sleep) couldn't handle the medicine, we were going ot have to put him down.

I was pretty hopeless yesterday until this news came on, because our vet and a group of specialists couldn't figure out why his perfectly healthy looking kidneys were failing because of medicine that he had taken before without any problems.

So in a way, I'm thankful it's the food, but holy crap, they mentioned putting him down a few times to me since kidney failure is normaly lights out for an animal.

It was just a rough time because here I was thinking maybe we messed up the dosage of his medicine and it was our fault he was having trouble and a million other things that ran through my head.

I also felt guilty because we kept feeding them this food. it was their favorite and we couldn't figure out why none of them would eat it (thought they would drink the gravy) without leaving bits on the floor.

Tyson's counts as of yesterday had come back down but they are all still high. Liver, kidneys, everything. There was one count - BUM, BNU, I don't remember- that was considered dangerously high at 45 and his was 160. Our vet about went white and told me to take him to the specialist right away. I've never been seen so quickly. I walked in, said I had Tyson, and they whisked him away.

Wow. Sorry to have rambled on. Anyhow- thanks for the support guys. It's terrific to know everybody here is so nice.

Ramble all you want to if it helps you feel better. You're obviously going through a tough time, so if rambling helps in any way, go ahead and do so.

I hope all turns out well for you and your pets

Re: 60 Million containers of Deadly Pet food Recalled

My dogs were getting sick about 3 weeks ago. We just bought some Walmart Brand dog food the dogs never had before. They were throwing up and were having digestive problems. I immediately stopped using that brand and got some Purina. Seems like they are alright now.

But it was Dry Dog Food, not the canned or foiled kind that seems to be causing the problems. But how do they know for sure?
