    Watson charging in bullpen

    Last 5 outings:

    4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 K

Could he be as promising a reliever, if not more promising, than Roenicke? He's got a very nice two-pitch arsenal (fastball, knuckle curve).

He was a closer for UT, correct?

Maybe that's the mentality he's used to.

Very nice to see. Even going back to his last 10 appearances his numbers are still impressive:

    10 IP, 9 H, 5 BB, 19 K, 2.70 ERA.

Hopefully he'll join the Chattanooga bullpen soon.

Here are Roenicke's numbers in his last seven appearances:

    6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K

Pedro Viola has been the one hard to figure out. I saw him pitch on TV in spring training and he clearly showed he had the stuff to be a solid major league reliever, however, he's been downright awful so far this year at Chattanooga. He's got a 7.00 ERA and has allowed 22 hits and 13 walks in 18 innings, though he has struckout 22 and allowed just one homerun. He did throw a 1-2-3 inning with three strikeouts in his last appearance so maybe he's going to turn it around. His stuff and size reminded me of Damaso Marte of the Pirates.

Yes, he was a closer in college. The Reds drafted him in the second round and moved him to the rotation to get him more innings. All along, though, the plan was to move him back to the bullpen. If you're a reliever drafted in the second round, then you better have a very good chance of becoming a closer in the future. Personally, I'd put Watson very slightly ahead of Roenicke on my prospect list.

I don't know much about how hard Watson throws, but does anyone here think that he could develop quickly into a "Joba Chamberlain"-type of reliever?

Watson struggled big time at High A last year and early this year. He's had a few strong outings. Right now, I'd settle for him "quickly" becoming good enough for AA, which he hasn't yet shown.

I said a few weeks ago that Watsons progress was disappointing but maybe he's turning it around. Keep it up for a few more weeks and send him to AA and Roenicke to AAA

Not a chance. But he could develop into a solid reliever though.

A couple other guys to watch for in the pen are Terrell Young and Philippe Valiquette in Dayton.

Young has a 3.13 ERA in 23 innings with a 13 BB/21 K, however, in May he has a 1.86 ERA and has allowed only two runs on three hits in 9.2 innings with a 5 BB/10 K ratio.

    On the season Valiquette has a 3.24 ERA in 25 innings with a 10 BB/31 K ratio but a 2 BB/20 K ratio in 11.1 innings in May.
