Jocketty has been making some serious moves in personnel lately in the minors, moving several forward. He is probably aware of the improvements made by Roenicke.

I really believe that group of players will have that athletic attitude that you can’t beat us type of fire in them once they get over the initiation period of Bruce. I really believe that Dunn, Phillips, Bruce, Votto, Hairston and Freel will push and pull one another to excel and jell as competitive driven force together.

I suppose it's water under the bridge, but I suspect Bruce might still be in Louisville if Krivsky was the GM. He let Votto play all year in AAA, and only brought him up in September last year. Wayne promoted players far more slowly than Jocketty seems to have done so far.

Yes any GM could have done that, but it signals that Jocketty is now moving forwards and you may very well see some of the types of moves that you are looking for, Jocketty had to start, now he has.

I'd actually prefer the Reds jettison Hatteberg. I really like Hatte, but Patterson is a better bench option than Hatte is at this juncture. Cutting Hatte would also be a smaller financial loss.

Of course, if the Reds keep Patterson, the temptation for Baker to continue using him regularly is still there.

That might be the move because Hatteberg struggles with pinch hitting and limited playing time, along with that lower priced contract. Plus Hatteberg is locked into playing one position and the Reds have several fillers to fill in at first base, and Hatterberg would probably like to have an opportunity to catch on where he might get more playing time naturally.

Dusty has been working a long time with Patterson clear back to Patterson's early days with Chicago, he always believed in him. I would like to see that relationship split up.

That's 108 innings of suck. A 7.08 ERA over those 108 innings. Those innings are relevant when looking at how the Reds have performed in 2008, they are not relevant when looking at how the Reds are going to perform in 2009/2010. None of those guys are going to be around then (save maybe Belisle in the bullpen). The flip side of this is that the good numbers Affeldt and Mercker have also shouldn't be considered.

If you want to evaluate the Reds' chances of being good in the future you need to look at the players who are still going to be here:

    Aaron Harang
    Edinson Volquez
    Bronson Arroyo
    Johnny Cueto
    Francisco Cordero
    Jared Burton
    Bill Bray

Those seven have combined for 313 innings of 3.76 ERA. It's not a full pitching staff, but it's a nice start. Those are the guys who will throw the lion's share of the innings over the next few seasons. It illustrates that the problem with the Reds staff is not that our best pitchers are worse than other teams' best pitchers, it's that our bad pitchers are worse than other team's bad pitchers.
    Nice post.

Hairston isn't the answer to any question. As a 5th outfielder and a 25th guy, I could almost make a case, but he's pretty horrible at short.

I'm very curious to hear any news regarding Bruce starting tonight, and I would expect (hope) that somebody will get that info out as early as possible, perhaps even early this afternoon.

A couple buddies and I are getting a small group together to possibly head down to the game, but our decision on whether to actually attend tonight's game likely hinges on if Bruce is starting.

The great thing about this for Jay Bruce is with the Reds is there is no pressure to win this year.

Hmmm.... I bet he didn't ask Wayne his opinion on that statement.

I wouldn't expect the public relations juggernaut that is the Cincinnati Reds to help you with that decision, Cyc.

They'll probably keep it under wraps until it's time to post lineups, tripping all over themselves again, and doing their best to keep it a secret, not let the word out and not sell tickets.

Either that, or Dusty decides to sit him tonight. You know, let him get acclimated to his new surroundings. After all, Corey can handle CF tonight against the RH.

If he's not starting, the Reds should keep him in Louisville. It makes no sense to promote him then sit him on the bench. He will be in the starting lineup! What spot in the order he bats well that's an entirely different question.

General manager Walt Jocketty said all along that they wouldn’t call him up until they decided he would play.

So … let’s see if he is in Tuesday’s lineup. They say his position isn’t center field, but it isn’t likely they’ll bench left fielder Adam Dunn or right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. If he plays — and why else would they call him up — he’ll be in center.
