Re: 2008 mock draft seclection thread

With the #49 pick in the 2008 draft the Kansas City Royals select

Riccio Torrez 2B 6-0 190 R/R He gets the ultimate compliment from scouts by being called a real "baseball player." He's a five-tool player, with the bat as the only plus one. Defensively, he'll make for a good second baseman as a pro and has a very mature makeup. His brother is the second baseman at ASU and he is committed to the same school. Torrez can flat-out hit the baseball. He uses excellent bat control and makes solid contact, usually up the middle and the other way. He's got a short and compact swing.

Royals Scouting Director: "We are thrilled to draft Riccio Torrez with the #49 pick. We feel he can develop and be part of the core of our up the middle for years to come. With his ability to hit the baseball to all parts of the field we feel he can one day let us get over our mistake of trading away Jeff Keppinger for next to nothing."

With the 50th pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, the Baltimore Orioles select:

    Bradley Holt, RHSP, UNC-Wilmington

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/...p=284#more-284

This righthander has a big big arm with plenty of durability at 6'4, 195, and room for projection. Holt maintains 94 mph velocity on his fastball deep into games, recently into the ninth inning of a game in which he threw 149 pitches. Lots of updside to this college arm.

With the 51st pick in the 2008 Draft, the Phillies select Catcher Adrian Nieto, American Heritage HS, Plantation, Fla.

    GM Pat Gillick
Adrian is an excellent HS bat that we are thrilled to add to the Phillies organization. Always a positive to add another HS All American in the 2nd round, and one that has tools aplenty. We're going to start him off catching - he certainly has the cannon arm and the athleticism to play catcher. He's got a monster power bat that will play anywhere, and great makeup to boot.

That makes three top notch up the middle athletes we've grabbed in our first three picks - very excited about how this draft class is shaping up.

True fact: Lobstein (shortened from its original Lobenstein) was actually built in a lab from the pieces of dead lobsters and then brought to life during a lightning storm.

Is that the opposite of a false fact?

Yes. False facts suck, even worse than the Marlins' starting pitching.

As an Ohio State fan, it pains me to say this...

With the 53rd pick in the draft, the Milwaukee Brewers select Zach Putnam, RH pitcher from the University of Meechigan.

And with the 54th pick in the draft, the Brewers would like to select Wright State's finest, lefty 1B/OF, Jeremy Hamilton (via Cincinnati Princeton High School).

With the 55th pick in the draft, Jim Bowden unhitches the top button on his leather pants and belches out the words Ryan Flaherty, SS, Vanderbilt. Then he turns to scouting director and asks, "Was that as good for you as it was for me baby?"

I'm not sure if Gordon Beckham is a true shortstop he looks more like a 2nd baseman to me.. Not sure if we need him at that pick.. I'd rather see us go with a left handed starter or 3rd baseman with that pick.. Maybe even Crow he looks like the best college starter

You always need the best player on the board and Beckham > Crow.

^^^ Any major publication back you up on that? Baseball America isn't infallible, but they have Crow at 5 on the draft tracker and Beckham at 8. I'm cool with either one.

Anyone have an opinion of Bradley Holt? BA projects him as a Top 50 pick and I thought the article I posted with my pick was pretty impressive.
