Marvin Miller tells HOF to stop nominating him

    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ar...articleid=7591

The Hall of Fame was in the headlines last week, and not just because the retirement of Mike Piazza kindled the inevitable debate over the catcher's Cooperstown credentials. No, an even more deserving honoree made waves via what was almost certainly a first: a request to the voters not to be elected.

The unusual appeal came from Marvin Miller, who served as the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association from 1966 to 1982, overseeing baseball's biggest change since integration via the dismantling of the Reserve Clause and the dawn of free agency. Snubbed by an ever-changing electoral process three times in the past five years, the 91-year-old Miller is not only tired of his hopes being dashed, but disillusioned with the institution itself.

    I love it.

When you get to be 91, you just don't care what anyone thinks anymore.

I thought that happened at 31?

I doubt that baseball will ever honor him while he is alive. Posthumously, yes but they will never give him the satisfaction.

    1. I think that Bowie Kuhn getting into the hall before just about anyone else associated with baseball is ridiculous.

    2. While I think Marvin Miller should be in, I don't know if this really helps his case or seems like whining. His stance about not wanting in because of some of the others already in would hold more credence if he were 60 and still well within the public awareness rather than taking it at 91 after years of wanting in and not getting it.

    3. The players who are members of the Hall have a lot of power, more so than baseball executives and owners if they chose to work together. Ironic that Miller fails to get in because Hall of Famers haven't learned the lessons he taught them when they were players.

    4. For a bunch of guys who make a big deal out of who gets into the Hall, you would think they would take serving on the selection committees more seriously.

Miller - the Ozzie Osborn of baseball.
I agree that not only should he be in, but electing Kuhn before Miller is preposterous.

You know what would really make him mad? If they actually elected him to the HOF. He'd really be steamed then.

Miller's request that he not be inducted into the HOF may be what finally gets him into the Hall.

I'm not sure I'd want to be part of club that elected Bowie Kuhn either.
