Pringles Inventor buried in Pringles Can

CINCINNATI - The man who designed the Pringles potato crisp packaging system was so proud of his accomplishment that a portion of his ashes has been buried in one of the iconic cans.

Fredric J. Baur, of Cincinnati, died May 4 at Vitas Hospice in Cincinnati, his family said. He was 89.

Baur's children said they honored his request to bury him in one of the cans by placing part of his cremated remains in a Pringles container in his grave in suburban Springfield Township. The rest of his remains were placed in an urn buried along with the can, with some placed in another urn and given to a grandson, said Baur's daughter, Linda Baur of Diamondhead, Miss.

Baur requested the burial arrangement because he was proud of his design of the Pringles container, a son, Lawrence Baur of Stevensville, Mich., said Monday.

Baur was an organic chemist and food storage technician who specialized in research and development and quality control for Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble Co.

Baur filed for a patent for the tubular Pringles container and for the method of packaging the curved, stacked chips in the container in 1966, and it was granted in 1970, P&G archivist Ed Rider said.

Baur retired from P&G in the early 1980s.

If he'd have thought to trademark the pringles duck bill, he could have retired in the 70's.

The man who designed the Mr. Pringle logo, also designed my company's logo, as well as the original Christian Moerlein labels. His name was Dave Diehl and he was a family friend. My logo, he did for gratis when I was 24 year old starting out my business. Great guy and I've always appreciated and been honored that I could say I had a first class logo designed by someone with his resume.

Thousands of years from now, archaeologists will dig that can up, inspect the contents and come to a logical conclusion: We were a bunch of cannibals which packaged our dead in fun-sized containers.

I wonder if his coffin had one of those cool, aluminum foil "freshness seals"....

Or the metal pull off top that you'd then slice your hand reaching in for the chips! Ouch!!! I'm glad they went to the all paperboard construction and that "freshness seal".

My hats off to the Pringles can inventor. That is great.

I think funerals and burials would be more fun if they were all themed.

Movie theater owners could have their funerals several times a day: 1:15, 3:40, 5:50, 7:25, 9:55 and 11:30.

Very funny. No disrespect to Mr. Pringles, intended. Funerals should be a time for celebration. It's the last time you'll ever have all of one's friends together to remember the good about someone.

When my grandma died back in 1967, a guy one of my cousins had dated was in the back of the funeral home telling jokes. I asked someone about this a few years ago and they told me that he and my older cousins would go to Grandma's apartment on Friday nights and play cards. Grandma had told him that when she died, he needed to come tell jokes, so he did.

My Grandpa had been an MC at vaudeville type variety shows in the 30's and 40's, so we were used to gags. Everybody's a joker in my mom's family!

I think they should just use the can to sprinkle his ashes somewhere. When it's empty give the can to a kid so he can put the plastic top back on and then stomp on the can to make that great "pop" sound.
