I like Cueto--I think he can eventually be a nice Javier Vazquez/Aaron Harang type anchor (that is, a very valuable arm), but Volquez represents a pitcher the likes of which I have never, ever seen in a Reds' uniform. All due respect, but Soto doesn't come close. Nope: not even Rijo. This kid is starting to blow my mind. What a joy to watch that game tonight. (And I'm not even drunk).

The Reds have gone toe to toe with the Phillies in all 3 of these games. Hopefully they can win tomorrow and get the split.

So far the Reds pitching, even given Arroyo's less than good start, has held the powerhouse Phillies to 8 runs in 3 games. The team that was averaging -what? 10 runs a game recently? Volquez is just amazing but let's not forget how well Harang pitched last night, either, or how the pen has been coming through. The pitching staff is coming together.
The Reds have held the Phillies to eight runs in three games. With just a little more offense the Reds could be going for the sweep tomorrow. Or at worst three of four.
Votto hits low in the order because Dusty sees that he has power and not a ton of speed. That makes him an "RBI guy" and "RBI guy"s hit down in the order.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
This was a baseball game for people who love baseball.
And Volquez is amazing -- he's on a different level right now.

Agree with you on this FCB, with regard to Volquez. And I hope Cueto is someday in the Vazquez/Harang class. That would be most excellent.
But Volquez? I agree, I have never seen anything like this from a Reds pitcher. And that includes 1982 Mario Soto.
12 straight games, two earned runs or less. Major league record is 14. Chew on that for a moment or three.
Letting Cordero strike out and hoping Hairston can get a hit is likely not going to get you any runs.
I think he should swing away considering the next hitter. He'slikley to strike out anyway. He hit the ball very hard, almost has a single up the middle. But just accepting a sure K would be against the odds.
