That's been the rule for a long time -- you can be a professional in one sport while retaining eligibility in another. It goes back at least to Danny Ainge, and I believe John Elway and Deion Sanders are among those who started their pro baseball careers while still playing college football.

There are a couple of caveats, though, if I remember right -- the player cannot be on scholarship, he has to pay his own way once turning pro in another sport; and turning pro in another sport does not exempt him from the NCAA's no-endorsements rule (e.g. Jeremy Bloom).
