since the crown jewels
Anyone think with Votto's recent surge he has a shot against the medie darling Cubs' Soto?
Soto's overall numbers do look better as of now (especially when you consider he's a catcher), but with a really great September, I wonder if Votto might be able to make a run.
Soto is a lock to win it. Votto could hit 30 homeruns and OPS .900 and Soto would win it because he plays for the first place Cubs.
Soto has to be a lock
"This isn’t stats vs scouts - this is stats and scouts working together, building an organization that blends the best of both worlds. This is the blueprint for how a baseball organization should be run. And, whether the baseball men of the 20th century like it or not, this is where baseball is going."---Dave Cameron, U.S.S. Mariner
FWIW, I think Soto deserves the award. I'm just saying if Votto had the same numbers as a rookie from a first place team, regardless of position, the award would probably go to the guy on the better team.
Unanimous for Soto. This was discussable in June. Not now.
Stick to your guns.
Votto's made a nice case, but Soto...the Cub...sadly, has the numbers, and should get it.
I think Hal Morris should win it instead of David Justice.

I think the AL race has gotten a little more interesting, with Longoria out of action and the Rays just rolling along without him like he was never there.

The AL award is going to be very interesting if for no other reason that there are about 10 guys putting up solid rookie years. I think Longoria is the clear winner and should also win the gold glove. At first blush, I'd rank them like this:
1. Longoria, TAM
2. Galarraga, DET
3. Chamerlain, NYY
4. Aviles, KC
5. Ziegler, OAK
I'm imagine Ellsbury and Alexi Ramirez will finish in the top 5 along side the first 3 I've listed and Galarraga will probably be 4th or 5th.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
Longoria should have the AL Rookie of the Year award locked up IMO.
