Weekly Organizational Game Roundup- #10 (June 5-11)

    AAA

Record this week: 3-3. Overall: 39-28, tied for first with Toledo (DET).

6/5: Man, how can I describe this one? Let’s jump right to the end: after scoring two to tie in the ninth off Jon Adkins, the Toledo Mud Hens added three more in the top of the eleventh off Tyler Pelland (L 0-2, 5.91, 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). The attempt by Louisville to BATS BACK fell one short, and the Mud Hens escaped with a wild 13-12 victory. C Alvin Colina homered twice (#5 and #6) and drove in five runs (.260). LF Drew T. Anderson was 4-for-6 with three runs scored (.253). 2B Andy Green (#4) and DH Jolbert Cabrera (#4) also clubbed homers. Starter Ramon Ramirez was blasted (6.06, 4 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 HR) by a club currently in the running to break the IL mark for team homers in a year. Logan Ondrusek (on loan from Sarasota), Todd Coffey, and Matt Belisle turned in scoreless work, but it was all downhill pitching-wise from there.

6/6: Justin Mallett limited the Hens to four hits and two runs in six innings (W 2-1, 3.00, 2 BB, 5 K) in Louisville’s 8-2 win. RF Jerry Gil, flailing on the interstate, was 3-for-4 with his first IL homer of 2008 (.183), driving in three runs. Anderson popped three more hits and drove in two. CF Chris Dickerson was 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI, and walk (.265). In relief of Mallett, Josh Roenicke retired six straight (1.80, 2 K) and Danny Herrera three more (1.21).

6/7: Now it was the Bats’ turn to win a wild one. Again, there’s too much scoring to accurately describe, but the Bats held off Indianapolis (PIT) for a 13-12 victory. Starter Daryl Thompson was pounded badly (4.26, 5 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 4 HR), serving up homers decent prospects like Steven Pearce and Neil Walker and former major-league starting catcher Ronny Paulino, but also fringe utility infielder Josh Wilson. Todd Coffey allowed two unearned in two innings with four Ks (3.78), Belisle got the win despite giving up runs again (W 2-0, 4.09, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB) and Adkins survived surrendering Paulino’s second homer of the game to get save #13 (2.16). As a matter of fact, Paulino finished 5-for-5 with two homers, three RBI, and four runs scored in his first game down from the big club. On the Bats’ end, Anderson and C Ryan Hanigan led the way with three RBI apiece. LF BJ Szymanski was 2-for-2 after entering the game partway through and Thompson helped his cause with two hits and two runs scored in two trips. SS Adam Rosales continued his climb to batting-line respectability by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a walk (.220). UT Luis Bolivar contributed a clutch RBI pinch-hit triple.

6/8: Again the Bats bullpen gets beaten up, with Herrera (BS, L 0-2, 2.38, 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER) taking the brunt of a five-run ninth-inning Indians rally as they turned a 6-4 deficit into a 9-7 win. Adkins gave up a three-run homer to Walker (two of the runs charged to Herrera) to cap the inning. Starter Matt Maloney was decent but not great (4.64, 6 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR) and DL returnee Marcus McBeth and Roenicke threw scoreless innings of relief. Dickerson had a fine evening at the plate, socking three hits, driving in three, and stealing two bags (12) to raise his average to .270. Gil slammed homer #2 and climbed off the aforementioned interstate with three hits and three runs scored (.200).

    6/9: Off.

6/10: Drew T. Anderson’s clutch ninth-inning single drove in Andy Green with the decisive run as the Bats nipped Pawtucket (BOS), 8-7. That knock (which capped a 2-for-4 night with two RBI for the recently outrighted Anderson, running his average to .266) made a winner out of Coffey, who’d blown the save (BS #2, W 1-2, 4.00, 1.1 IP, 2 K) by allowing a homer to PawSox CF Jonathan Van Every the inning previous. Roenicke allowed two hits but made it through the bottom of the ninth for his first International League save (1.29). Starter Adam Pettyjohn was fairly hittable (4.72, 5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER) and Pelland was scored on yet again (5.87, 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 HR). Green finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and his fifth home run (.249). Rosales added two more hits as well (.232).

6/11: Close game through the seventh- when the PawSox blasted Belisle and McBeth for seven earned, including two homers. They’d end up with an easy 11-3 win. Marcus now has a 16.20 ERA in eight 2008 appearances. Ramirez pitched three scoreless before getting whacked in the fourth (L 2-1, 6.43, 4.2 IP, 4 ER). Rosales pounded a long home run, his second (.232).

Notes: 6/5: RHS Homer Bailey recalled, RHR Marcus McBeth and LHR Tyler Pelland returned from DL. OF BJ Szymanski promoted from Chattanooga, replacing the recalled Corey Patterson. LHR Danny Herrera demoted back to Louisville from Cincinnati. 6/6: RHR Logan Ondrusek returned to Sarasota. 6/10: Herrera returned to Cincinnati, replacing RHR Gary Majewski (bereavement list). UT Jolbert Cabrera’s contract was purchased by the Reds, as they needed a replacement for the injured Jerry Hairston Jr. 6/11: LHR Camilo Vazquez came up from Sarasota for some temp duty.

    AA

Record this week: 4-2. Overall: 35-31, tied for third, five back of Huntsville (MIL).

6/5: After the Lookouts rallied for six (!) runs in the ninth inning to tie the score, Tennessee (CHC) won anyway on a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eleventh, 9-8. Pedro Viola continued his season-long struggle (L 0-4, 6.66, 0.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 BB). Starter Jordan Smith also struggled (6.60, 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 WP). Three of those six ninth-inning runs came on RF Sean Henry’s fifth homer (.291).

6/6: This time Chattanooga built an 8-1 lead (thanks to 21 hits) and withstood a five-run rally by the Smokies to hang on, 8-6. Two solo homers amidst four hits for LF Danny Dorn (.278) and three RBI for RF Thomas Collaro. Five hits in six trips for SS Chris Valaika (.288) and C Craig Tatum added three hits and two RBI (.239). Sam Lecure pitched very well for six innings (W 4-3, 4.57, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), although Derrik Lutz took the five-run battering (7.88, 0 IP) directly following him. Viola made it through a scoreless inning this time (6.39, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K), allowing his one inherited runner to score. Sean Watson pitched the eighth and Carlos Fisher (save #3) the ninth.

6/7: *Another* slugfest. The Lookouts win this one as well, 8-7, after scoring four in the seventh. 3B Eric Eymann hit his very first homer of the season off Smokies/Cubs prospect Jeff Samardzija. 2B Michael DeJesus, back up from Sarasota, also homered. He drove in three runs and is hitting .583 all told for his stint in the Southern League. Valaika added two more hits as he approached .300 (.298). Starter Travis Wood had a rocky outing (4.70, 3.1 IP, 6 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) but his relief help picked things up- Mike Hrynio (10.57, 1.2 IP), Lee Tabor (W 1-0, 2.61, 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER) and Robert Manuel (save #1, 3 IP, 2 H, 3 K, 1.62).

6/8: James Avery turned in his best start of the season (W 3-3, 5.21, 8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) and Collaro (#2), Valaika (#4) and Dorn (#3) all homered in the Lookouts 4-2 win. Fisher notched save #4 (3.96).

6/9: Four wins in a row, as the bumbling Smokies made four errors and Chattanooga cruised, 9-2. Eymann homered again (#2, 3 RBI, 3 R) and Ben Jukich rebounded with a good start (W 6-2, 2.61, 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Lutz also pitched well in low-leverage duty (7.36, 1.2 IP, 3 K).

    6/10: Off.

6/11: West Tenn (SEA) nipped the Lookouts, 3-1. Smith took the loss (L 1-2, 5.85, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). Again Viola was scored upon (6.26, 2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB), although his second inning was better than his first.

Notes: 6/5: The Lookouts signed ex-Chicago White Sox farmhand and OF Thomas Collaro to replace the promoted BJ Szymanski.

    High-A

Record this week: 3-4. Overall: 31-35, fourth place- 13 back of Fort Myers (MIN).

6/5: The Reds were held hitless (despite scoring a run) until the eighth inning, losing to Vero Beach (TB) 5-1. CF Drew Stubbs’ groundout scored Sarasota’s lone run. Daniel Guerrero (L 3-5, 7.31, 6.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) took the defeat.

6/6: Apparently the Reds saved their bats for this one, unloading fourteen hits and twelve runs on VB in a 12-3 rout. RF Chris Heisey (#3, 3 R scored), 1B Todd Frazier (#5, 3 RBI) and 3B Juan Francisco (#9) all homered. Win to Scott Carroll (W 2-1, 5.19, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

6/7: The Rays scored four in the seventh off Phil Valiquette (L 0-1, 7.94, 1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER) to beat the Reds, 7-3. Starter Alex Smit kept it going (3.33, 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Two hits apiece for Francisco (.288), DH Jason Louwsma (.257), LF Carson Kainer (.239), and Heisey (.276).

6/8: VB starter Heath Rollins dominated, firing a complete game three-hit shutout with ten strikeouts. Enerio Del Rosario (L 0-2, 9.24, 4 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) was the losing pitcher.

    6/9: Rained out.

6/10: Makeup doubleheader time against Jupiter (FLA)! Game one saw Stubbs hammer a first-inning grand slam (#3) as the Reds win it, 7-5. Rehabbin’ Norris Hopper and Rehabbin’ Jeff Keppinger batted 1-2 in the lineup, contributing a total of three hits and one RBI in eight at-bats. Todd Frazier, back at shortstop, was 3-for-4 (.287). Starter Rafael Gonzalez retired the first nine batters he faced, then suddenly imploded in the fourth (8.10, 4 IP, 4 ER). The win went to Ruben Medina (W 1-3, 2.91, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 K) and save #6 to Ramon Geronimo (0.98).

    Game two was a 9-3 Jupiter rout. The major-leaguers didn’t play and only LF Dan Perales (.313, 2-for-3, R) got more than one hit. Guerrero got beat up yet again (L 3-6, 7.48, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR).

6/11: Two runs in the ninth, courtesy of an error, a Rehabbin’ Hopp base on balls, a Justin Tordi sacrifice bunt with a throwing error tacked on, a balk, an opposing manager ejection, and a clinching RBI single by Todd Frazier, won the contest for Sarasota 4-3. Phil Valiquette got his first FSL win with a scoreless top of the ninth (W 1-1, 6.75, 1 IP, 2 K). Rehabbin’ Josh Fogg wasn’t a whole heck of a lot better than he was with the big club (5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). Misael DeJesus fired three scoreless and whiffed five (5.58). Frazier finished 3-for-4 (.296).

Notes: 6/5: OF Yuber Rodriguez, 24, originally a Toronto signee out of Venezuela, was signed to be a backup. He hit .235/.296/.367 last year between Low-A and High-A.

    Low-A

Record this week: 1-5. Overall: 27-37, last place- nine back of Lansing (TOR).

6/5: It’s been a rough, rough road in Dragonville lately. South Bend (ARI) beat the Dragons 10-3. Loss to Luis Montano (L 6-4, 4.96, 5 IP, 6 ER). The Dayton bullpen followed him by issuing ten walks in four innings.

    6/6: 5-2 loss to the Silverhawks. Josh Ravin (L 1-3, 5.00, 4 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) wasn’t hit hard, but his defense committed three errors. 3B Brandon Waring hit his 12th homer in the ninth, finishing 3-for-4 (.267).

6/7: 3-2 loss. Getting better, but not enough. Curtis Partch (L 2-8, 5.64, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER) started. Good relief work from Derrick Conatser (1.50, 2.1 IP) and Jeff Jeffords (3.31, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 K). SS Zach Cozart lashed a pair of triples (.232) and RF Jeremy Reed hit homer #6.

6/8: 9-1 loss. Backslide time. Jamie Arneson (L 0-3, 8.76, 3.1 IP, 6 ER, 7 BB) started out okay but ran off the rails in the fourth. RF Anthony Gressick’s home run was his first professional bomb.

    6/9: Rained out.

6/10: Twelve losses in thirteen after Fort Wayne took a makeup doubleheader, 4-3 and 4-2. The Dragons grabbed a 3-2 lead in the first game, but Jeffords was charged with single runs in the sixth and seventh (BS #4, L 2-2, 3.67, 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER). Starter Matt Klinker pitched solidly (3.14, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) and 1B Logan Parker hit homer #5. Game two saw Montano (L 6-5, 5.02, 4.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) get outdueled. 2B Angel Cabrera drove in both Dragons runs (.250).

6/11: DRAGONS WIN! Devin Mesoraco drove in four runs with an RBI single, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly and Tyler Rhoden (W 2-0, 3.48, 3 IP, 6 H, 1 ER) and Jeremy Horst (save #4, 3.89, 2 IP, 5 K) managed five good innings of relief in a 5-4 victory over the Wizards. Starter Josh Ravin: 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 5.32 ERA. 1B Logan Parker was 3-for-5 (.202) and RF Jeremy Reed 2-for-3 with an RBI (.250)
