    Joseph Krebs promoted to Sarasota

Krebs' biggest problem after promotion? Transferring his truck

    By Marc Katz

    Staff Writer

    Monday, June 23, 2008

DAYTON — Joseph Krebs, who in his last three appearances recorded two saves and a victory, was promoted to high Class A Sarasota (Fla.) on Sunday, June 22, and was trying to figure out a way to get himself, his truck and a good portion of his family to Florida at the same time.

Krebs, who was 6-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 26 relief appearances for the Dragons, is making room for pitcher Daniel Guerrero, who pitched for the Dragons in each of the last two seasons but was 3-6 with a 7.48 ERA with Sarasota this season.

Guerrero is scheduled to start for the Dragons tonight.

Krebs is headed to Port St. Lucie, where the Sarasota Reds play their next three games. Complicating his trip is the fact he wasn't to take his truck with him, and his mom, grandmother, grandfather and brother were arriving today from Texas to see him pitch in Dayton.

The Reds gave Krebs permission to drive to Florida, but he was considering flying while letting his family drive his vehicle down.

Still, he was happy to make the move.

"You never know what's going to happen," Krebs said. "You could get promoted. One day, you could be out of here (released), too."

    Big turn around

Despite Sunday's loss, the Dragons seem to have turned things around, at least against Great Lakes. The Loons were 9-2 against the Dragons in the first half and 1-3 against them in the second. In two of Dayton's three victories against the Loons last week, the Dragons came from behind to win.

South Bend visits for a four-game series beginning tonight, another chance for the Dragons to turn around their fortunes. In the first half, the Silver Hawks won six of the seven games played against the Dragons, including four straight at Fifth Third Field earlier this month.

    Fun and games

It's not all games for the Dragons. Saturday, the team hosted more than 1,000 youths from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in a clinic-like situation called the Dragons MVP Day for top students in the area.

It's a long day for the players — they had to be at the park at 9 a.m. and had a game that night — but they do it every year and it didn't seem to affect their Saturday night play. They won 6-0.

Also Sunday, following their game with Great Lakes, the players were invited to a picnic hosted by the Dragons Friends Booster Club.

    Quick shower

Players took the field Sunday during a strong shower which stopped just prior to the first pitch. It didn't rain again the rest of the afternoon.

I knew the Krebs cycle guy personally. My father worked in his lab. He told me stories about his mentor, Otto Warburg. Now part of my work is on something called the Warburg effect. Life is a cycle.

Krebs was a friendly little German guy who became a Moony later in life, and was denied a visa by the British government as a result. they wouldn't tolerate a knighted individual traveling to Korea and saying anything controversial. I can't imagine that happening in the U.S.
