Skipworth sets the market for Alonso

MIAMI (AP)—The Florida Marlins signed catcher Kyle Skipworth on Wednesday, getting their first-round draft pick to agree to a signing bonus of about $2.3 million.

Skipworth was the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.

On the one hand, i am glad for this to occur since it will narrow the negotiations range for Alonso... on the other, a 2.3 million signing bonus (assume the Reds, at one pick later will have to pay 2.1) scares me.

That's acceptable. Didn't Tim Beckham get $6-something million?

    yes.

At this point we really have no idea yet what kind of money Alonso is looking for.

Jocketty has said they plan to stick to the slot number and hope they can work that out with Alonso. Time will tell.

For a change, I don't think the Reds major league payroll is directly tied to the money they spend in the minors or on prospects. Therefore I could care less what Alonso wants [as long as its 'reasonable']. If they throw 2.5 at him, I don't mind. Do it, get more talent into the system.

    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

if 2009 is supposed to be a good draft the Reds can certainly play hardball in the negotiations.

There was an article on Foxsports.com that said that the 09 class is very weak. It was basically talking about teams and the need to trade players before the deadline instead of picking up comp picks.

Wow, around $2.2 mil would be very reasonable for Alonso. If he in fact signs for his slot value of course.
