Jocketty remains quiet about trade plans

Jocketty remains quiet about trade plans
Reds' GM has his lips sealed as Trade Deadline approaches
    By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CHICAGO -- Trade activity has been generally quiet surrounding the Reds lately, but the CC Sabathia trade from the Indians to the Brewers appears to have unkinked the transaction wire. With his club only four games under .500 entering Tuesday, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty hasn't publicly indicated whether his team would be buyers or sellers.
"I think things will start opening up more to react to that deal," Jocketty said at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. "I would expect to see things start to move a bit now. I can tell you I have been getting more phone calls."
Meanwhile, the Sabathia trade to the Brewers will have an almost immediate ripple effect on the Reds. He is scheduled to pitch on Sunday vs. Cincinnati after he already worked eight scoreless innings against them for Cleveland on June 27.
"It's a good move on their part," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I just wish he had gone to another division. We have a lot of games left with [Milwaukee]."

A short time later, the National League Central-leading Cubs answered the third-place Brewers' trade by acquiring pitcher Rich Harden from the A's in a six-player deal.
The Reds will have 13 potential free agents at season's end, including Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. There have been no rumors surrounding either star player and interest is believed low. Scouts instead appear to be looking at reliever David Weathers and catcher David Ross. The Marlins, after losing starting catcher Matt Treanor to an injury, are reported to possibly have an increased interest in Ross.
Jocketty would not discuss specific players he could be talking about with other GMs. This could be a big week in determining which route he goes. If the Reds have a good six-game road trip through Chicago and Milwaukee before the All-Star break, the current team could stay intact longer. If it's a bad trip -- players could be more easily jettisoned if there's a match.
"We're trying to win as many games as we can," Jocketty said. "With this team we have, I think we're still a competitive team. We are a team that can continue to play well and get to .500. If there are things we can do to make us better, yeah. We'll look at whatever opportunities are out there that can improve the club in the present and future."
One move that shouldn't be expected is a trade of rotation ace Aaron Harang. A recently published report indicated Harang could be potential trade bait because Jocketty hadn't included Harang on his "untouchables" list. That story was downplayed.
"I don't want to get into who is available or not available," Jocketty said. "You can't ever say you won't talk about anybody. But it's pretty difficult to talk about certain players. And I would put Harang in that category."

Jocketty will do nothing, just like DanO, and the Reds will limp into August and September with the same old roster. Good organizations with a plan make trades to cut dead weight and improve the team for next year and beyond, bad ones do nothing. Enough said.
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.

Not his fault we have an over the hill outfielder nobody wants and a low average hitting outfielder nobody wants.

We just have to wait til the offseason to lose those two.

if we lose dunn we get two draft picks correct, assuming he doesnt accept arbitration. If we decline Jrs. options do we still get two draft picks?

is it possible.. if Junior REALLY wants to stay in Cincy.. for them to resign him for 2 years.. canceling his option.. to a much lower contract.. meaning like 4-6 mil a year.. not that he will.. but is that legal in the baseball contract world? he already took a pay cut once to build a team.. if we make enough moves me he will want to again.. not like he needs the money that bad anyway..

why would u want to pay 4-6 mil to an old injury prone, slow, and bad defensive and offensive player when u could get better production from the farm system

Griffey is a liability for the fact that as long as he is here, Baker will continue to bat him third when he should be hitting sixth or seventh. Plus the fact that he is a very average offensive player at this point in his career and a below-average defensive player. This team needs no part of Ken Griffey Jr. as it looks forward.

he would be a sufficient piece if he freed up salary cap.. by no means is he the center piece of this team.. that solely is with B-Phill and the young pitchers in my mind.. but he is a fine addition if he is relatively cheap for a starting outfielder, who still can put up 30 homers and 85 rbis.. and while his defense isnt GREAT.. its still better than the living organism in our left field...

I would rather have griffey as the third outfielder for 5 mil, than a ryan freel if we are going to keep hopper, hairston and patterson past this year.. by no means do i think he is a 3 hole hitter now.. but 5 6 or 7 is right up his alley.. ohh thats right we don't have 3 guys to fill the 2,3,4 spots either.. soo lets bump him up..

30 homers/85 RBI? Where are you getting those numbers? He'll have to not only get really hot, but also stay healthy in the second half to put up numbers like that.

His actual pace for this season is 19-20 homers and 68 RBI while batting .238. This is for someone batting third or fourth in your lineup all season. Is it any wonder we struggle to score runs?

Votto has hit sixth or seventh almost all season. Why? He is so much better than Griffey right now. Griffey continues to hit third for no other reason than Dusty "respects" him and won't move him, regardless of how it effects the team. He needs to be gone. Period. If our manager can't see that he needs to be bumped down, the we can save him the decision.

Re: Jocketty remains quiet about trade plans

Unless Junior volunteered to come out of the lineup or move down in the lineup, I don't see the upside in the Reds demoting him. It would be a PR nightmare, especially since the Reds aren't going anywhere this year. His playing time isn't stunting any minor leaguer's growth. Let him play out his contract and figure out what to do in the offseason.

I'm not sure what Jocketty could do with this team. The marketable pieces are the ones you want to keep. The unmarketable ones who are free agents after this year (Dunn) would probably return less than the 2 draft picks you'd get if he was offered and declined arbitration. Which brings up the question--if there really is no market for Dunn, what are the chances he accepts arbitration?

Are you saying it would be a PR nightmare to move Griffey down in the lineup against his will? I don't see that.

Ahhhorsepoo please take off you Jr.-colored glasses.

I wouldn't want him with the Reds next year for the league minimum. The harm he brings the Reds go way beyond his poor offense and defense.

Re: Jocketty remains quiet about trade plans

Maybe it wouldn't be a PR nightmare if they just moved him down--it would depend on how Junior handles it.

Like it or not, Junior's still the most popular Red. Just look at the voting for the All Star Game. And while popularity shouldn't drive playing time, baseball is still a business, and fans, both inside and outside of Cincy, still come to the games to see Junior play.

Where I come out is that while the team is clearly better with Junior down in the lineup or (preferably) out of the lineup, how many wins are the Reds looking to gain? 3? 4? It's just not going to make a difference in the 2008 final analysis.
