How important are the top prospects lists?

Here are two players who have never been high up on the Reds' lists. They were developed slowly, played a number of minor league seasons. Yet they are both playing very well so far in the major leagues. The jury is obviously still out.

A good organization likely has a number of hidden gems, guys who can succeed in time with an opportunity. Ramon Ramirez may be another.

There's the key sentence. But they have shown well so far definitely looks like they can contribute and that's about all you can ask for from non-high draft pick types.

There are a lot of players who don't show tons of success in the minors and then turn it on in the bigs. Heck, look at Geovany Soto for the Cubs this year. In the minors he'd never hit more than 9 HR's or hit better than .275 or so. Then in his last year in the minors, he blossomed and hit 26 HR's and hit .350+. Dickerson is doing exactly that this year. He's been a middling prospect for years, but this season he's turned the corner and finally started to hit consistantly. Prospect lists are pure conjecture. Lots of young hitters struggle in the lower minors...not always because of their own weaknesses, but because they're not facing good pitching. Facing pitchers who throw strikes can correct quite a few flaws in a hitters approach. Hopefully, that's what we're seeing from Dickerson and also from Stubbs this year.
