The latest reliever to heat up is Juan Rafael of Dayton. It seems that just about every affiliate is loaded with two or three relievers who are putting up great numbers. Now, it's not unusual for relievers to post better metrics than starting pitchers; but that said, does it seems like the balance in the Reds' system is overweighted toward the bullpen? Does it seem like some of these guys might/should be converted to starters? Again, the stats can be deceiving; but it's something to ponder.
Rafael has been great but is not a prospect. Aguido Gonzalez is another one who does not have the stuff that translates into success against better hitters. I have been told that the Reds are not that high on Geronimo as a major league prospect, but you can't ignore the numbers he has put up this season. Stewart is the real deal. Horst has come out of nowhere and will have a chance.
So which of these guys is major-league ready?
It would be a serious boost to the parent club if we could replace some of the relief pitching we're bound to lose in the offseason with some cheap, homegrown talent.
I have to think Roenicke and Herrera are ready. Geronimo and Manuel maybe by midseason. Pelland could be in the mix if he continues piching well.
I hope Aguido makes it to the majors. I would love hearing his name all the time. I'd think of some mob hitman.
Why is Robert Manuel still pitching Chattanooga? He seems to be dominating at that level.
Nevermind, I just saw that Manuel made his AAA debut last night with 2 shutout innings. That promotion seemed long over due to me.
OK, I'm sure there was some kind of Louisville roster reason this happened, but are you telling me Robert Manuel---who continues to DOMINATE AA batters-- pitches 2 shutout innings in his first outing for the triple-A Bats, and promptly gets shipped back to Chattanooga????????? Com'on! It better not be because they had to make room for frickin Todd Coffey. Man.

I mentioned this earlier on the minor league thread, but Carlos Fisher seems to be stepping it up a notch in Louisville. His numbers: 8 2/3 IP, 5 Hits, 1 run, 1 ER, 5 BB, 12 K, 1.04 ERA, and a .179 BAA allowed in Louisville. I would like to see him get a September callup if he continues like this the rest of August.
