    Exciting playoff races shaping up

With just four days left in the regular season there are some exciting playoff races shaping up.

NL West - It looks like Dunn won't to get experience playoff baseball again this season after the D-Backs blew a 4.5 game lead in the division with just a month to go. The D-Backs now trail the Dodgers in the NL West by four games with just four games remaining. The Dodgers would have to lose their final four games and the D-Backs win their final four just to force a one game playoff.

NL East - The Phillies lead the Mets by 1.5 games. The Mets host the Cubs today while the Phillies are off. A Mets loss drops them two back with three remaining while a win moves them to just a game back. The Phillies play the Nationals over the weekend.

NL Wild Card - The Mets and Brewers are tied in the WC. The Mets will host the Cubs today and then the Marlins over the weekend. The Brewers play the Pirates tonight and then host the Cubs over the weekend. The question is will Sweet Lou play his starters or rest them up for the playoffs?

In the American League three teams have already clinched playoff berths. The Angles clinched the AL West a couple weeks ago. The Rays and Red Sox have both clinched playoff berths as well. The Rays lead the Sox in the AL East by three games with four remaining - one more Rays win or one more Red Sox loss means the Rays clinch the East. The last time the Red Sox or Yankees didn't win the Al East was 1997 when the Orioles won it.

The AL Central is perhaps the most exciting race of the bunch. Just two days ago the White Sox led the Twins by 2.5 games with six remaining and had a big three series coming up in Minnesota. If the Sox were to win just one of those games it would pretty much lockup the Central. Fast forward to today and the Twins have taken the first two and now trail the White Sox by only a half game in the Central. A Twins win today moves them into first place and puts Griffey and the Sox in danger of missing the playoffs. The remaining schedule favor the Twins - the Twins will host the Royals over the weekend while the Sox would play the hot Indians. The White Sox also have a makeup game they may have to play Monday against the Tigers.

About a month ago it looked like Dunn and Griffey would both get to experience playoff baseball this season but now Dunner and the D-Backs are all but eliminated and Griffey and the Sox are in danger.

BTW, Carlos Zambrano got rocked again last night and his arm is clearly still hurting him. Do you think Cubs fans can slowly feel their World Series chances slipping through their fingers?

Should prove interestng the last series of the year vs. the Beer Makers.

I wonder if Lou will run Harden out there, or if he'll rest him for their 1st (and hopefully only) playoff series.

They have owned the Brewers this year. That's why I would rather not see them in the playoffs.

I really can't root for either the Mets (hate them) or the Cubs (really hate them). So the Brewers get my vote by default, albeit a very lukewarm one.

Both the Mets and Brewers seem to be ralphing up a hairball. But I sense the Brewers may be past that and actually playing some decent ball.

I watched that Mets-Cubs game last night and the Mets are obviously and very plainly pressing waaaay too hard. The hairball is in mid-throat. Not a good place for it to be going into the last weekend of the season.

IIRC, the Dodgers have blown a 4 game lead with 4 to play at least once.

This whole weekend could be a mess. There is a nor'easter brewing that could completely wipe out the weekend series in New York and possibly Philly. If that were to happen MLB would have to push the playoffs back about five days or so. Or maybe they move the series from New York to Milwaukee.

Bud has decided that just in case there is weather that would affect this games in the northeast that ALL games with playoff implications this weekend will be played in Milwaukee.
Furthermore begining in 2009 any game that is scheduled on a day that the 10-day forcast calls for a 40% or greater chance of rain will be played in Milwaukee.
Also the World Series will become a best of 7-win by two series and all games beyond the seventh game will be held in Milwaukee.
Lastly the World Series champion will have the official MLB ticker tape parade in Milwaukee and eventually the WS winners will make their White House visit the following day once Bud gets the US Capitol moved to Milwaukee.

IIRC, in the early 80's the Astros blew a lead on the last weekend and played the Dodgers in a playoff game in which the Astros won. Maybe your thinking of that one.

It used to be something the Reds were annually a part of or at least in contention to be in. But that is a long lost dinosaur.

If the Milwaukee can get in and if Sheets is healthy they could do some damage. But those are big ifs, especially the second one.

The D-Backs lost today so the Dodgers clinched the NL West.

    Five teams have now clinched:

    Rays
    Angels
    Red Sox
    Dodgers
    Cubs

The Mets just scored a run in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Mets 7-6 and move to within a game of the Phillies in the NL East.

The Brewers are tied 1-1 in the 9th inning.

Ryan Braun just hit a two out grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Brewers a huge 5-1 win over the Pirates. The Brewers remain tied in the wild card with the Mets with only three games left. The Mets trail the Phillies by a game in the East. That will make for an exciting weekend.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota the Twins were down 6-1 but have come back and tied the game at 6-6. Game is in the 9th inning.
