Anybody know how good Hanigan is defensively?

I wouldn't think he was on the allstar team if was wasn't any good. If you look at his bio he did well last year in Cincy at the end of the season. I know one pitcher who really loves him.

IIrc, his birthday is August 15th. That was Miguel Rodriguez.

He's a long ways off, but he just turned 18. IIRC, pitching was not his main focus in high school.

In a nutshell power would be one issue with him. I might also assume that he could very well still be solidifying some of the finer nuances of catching.

Career minor league line:

.292 BA/.380 OBP/.370 Slg%/.750 OPS 1800 PA's

You have to be one heck of a defensive catcher for that line to translate to a gig in MLB. Just to give you some perspective here's a another guy who has been reputed as a good (not to be confused with elite) defensive oriented catcher, through roughly the same timeline in their careers.

.263/.342/.386/.728 OPS (Through age 27, with 12 AB's and 2 singles at age 34 in AA) 1520 PA's

His name is Paul Bako. Bako seems to have more power than Hanigan if you go through his year by year #'s Bako outslugged Hanigan in most every year albeit bye a small enough final # not make much difference. Hanigan still looks to be a better overall hitter with more BB's and far less K's than Bako. And in the end I assume Hanigan will be a better pro but not so much so that it will be all that noticeable. Hanigan is likely a classic solid back-up catcher who if he hit LH would probably have been already backing up this year.

I'd assume he's not much with the glove, or else he would have seen the bigs by now or someone would have picked him up when the REDS released him a few years ago (they re-signed him). Or maybe there was an issue with injuries. Managers love defensive oriented catchers as backups.

His hitting numbers are decent enough. Consistenly good OBP skills throughout his career, with little power. I don't see why that wouldn't translate to something acceptable at the ML level, especially now he would be expected to hit his peak (turns 28 in a few days).
