    Tonight's (8/4) Lineup, versus a Lefty

    Jeff Keppinger ss

    Joey Votto 1b

    Edwin Encarnacion 3b

    Brandon Phillips 3b

    Adam Dunn lf

    Jolbert Cabrera rf

    Jay Bruce cf

    David Ross c

    Bronson Arroyo p

    vs. LH Manny Parra

This ACTUALLY make sense, because it's against a Lefty - problem is, against RHP, he swaps out EE for Bruce and moves EE behind Dunn. Here's the splits for these two lineups:

    Tonights, versus LHP:

    Code:
Versus LHP	G	AB	R	H	2B	3B	HR	RBI	BB	K	SB	CS	AVG	OBP	SLG	OPS

    Jeff Keppinger	39*	87*	9*	33*	3*	2*	2*	14*	9*	1*	0*	0*	.379*	.438*	.529*	.966*
    Joey Votto	62*	121*	17*	34*	4*	0*	6*	24*	14*	36*	2*	2*	.281*	.358*	.463*	.820*
    EEncarnación	54*	99*	23*	31*	7*	0*	4*	8*	19*	14*	1*	0*	.313*	.429*	.505*	.934*
    BPhillips	62*	129*	21*	43*	6*	3*	9*	28*	11*	12*	8*	2*	.333*	.387*	.636*	1.023
    Adam Dunn	60*	102*	15*	21*	3*	0*	7*	17*	26*	38*	0*	0*	.206*	.385*	.441*	.826*
    Jolbert Cabrera	N/A **
    Jay Bruce	38*	80*	11*	15*	4*	0*	0*	5*	7*	26*	1*	2*	.188*	.258*	.238*	.496*
    David Ross	32*	58*	9*	13*	1*	0*	1*	6*	14*	18*	0*	1*	.224*	.370*	.293*	.663*
Actually doesn't look TOO BAD!! But, you have to wonder how this team can't beat LHP?!?!
Maybe it can with CFP and Bruce out of the top 2 spots...

    Code:
Versus RHP	G	AB	R	H	2B	3B	HR	RBI	BB	K	SB	CS	AVG	OBP	SLG	OPS
    Jeff Keppinger	73*	196*	19*	44*	10*	0*	1*	11*	11*	12*	2*	1*	.224*	.271*	.291*	.562*
    Joey Votto	104*	244*	27*	68*	17*	1*	8*	26*	23*	39*	2*	2*	.279*	.341*	.455*	.796*
    Jay Bruce	59*	153*	24*	48*	6*	0*	9*	22*	9*	34*	1*	2*	.314*	.354*	.529*	.883*
    BPhillips	108*	302*	41*	76*	14*	2*	7*	36*	18*	62*	14*	4*	.252*	.297*	.381*	.677*
    Adam Dunn	107*	244*	43*	62*	10*	0*	25*	57*	53*	72*	1*	1*	.254*	.383*	.602*	.986*
    EEncarnación	100*	252*	34*	57*	13*	1*	16*	35*	22*	46*	0*	0*	.226*	.301*	.476*	.778*
    Corey Patterson	70*	181*	25*	37*	9*	1*	7*	16*	7*	23*	9*	3*	.204*	.233*	.381*	.614*
    *David Ross	42*	67*	5*	16*	7*	0*	2*	7*	15*	17*	0*	0*	.239*	.386*	.433*	.818*
SOOOO many holes with this, don't know where to start.
Okay - so how about the fact that Dunn's BATTING AVERAGE against RHP is BETTER then Phillips; you know, that stat that ALL these Dunn Bashers LOVE to pull out. Reminder, this is against roughly 70% PERCENT OF BOTH OF THEIR AT-BATS!!!!! And, his OPS is a mere 309 points higher - thats right THREE HUNDRED POINTS!!! And, he's the 2nd LEAST Powerful guy in the lineup, behind a struggling Keppinger.
Yep, THIS the guy who should be our cleanup hitter ?!?!?!

Also Keppinger is STILL in the lead-off spot against RHP!?!?!? Well, I guess he is the SS, so he's got to bat 1st or 2nd.

Keppinger and EE seem to be having uncharacteristicly bad years against RHP - although EE at least continues to OPS fairly high. BP however, is just a tad below his career norms and especially in the last 3 years. He just flat out STINKS against RHP.

Of particular note, Votto - who is a Lefty - actually fares a tad better against LHP then RHP. Interesting. This guy definitely should be penciled into the #2 hole next year for about 150 games. The ONLY guy who can hit consistently from both sides of the plate.

TWO guys who are hitting above .260 against RHP, and two guys in the top 5 slugging with OBP/SLG under .300 and .400 (and OPS-ing under .700).

    P U!!

I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008

Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009

That really isn't a bad lineup. I think I'd move Ross up, though. He has a .570 3-year SLG vs. RH. He should be ahead of Bruce and Cabrera. Gives you a nice L-R power-hitting combo with Dunn.

With all the talk of needing a RH bat, it looks to me like we could use another LH. Dickerson > Patterson, anyone?

I know, it is kind of a mystery huh?!?

Looks like we actually hit BETTER against Lefties as a lineup than against Righties.

I think Keppinger and EE are having ISOLATED bad years against RHP, as it is not in line with career norms for them - although Kepp is much more limited experience-wise so who really knows, he's also hurt this year, but it hasn't stopped him from MASHING Lefties.

But if everyone is SOOO worried about us being Lefty-heavy - we're talking only about Votto, Bruce and Dunn at this point. Everyone else is a righty - other than CFP who is a FA who by the love of God should NOT be here next year.

IMO, we definitely need a lefty, and in particular Dunn, otherwise we are looking REALLY anemic against RHP - you know the ~70% of the AB's our team gets.

It'll be interesting to see how they fare against Bush tonight. He's been pitching well lately.

2 runs in the first inning. What else is new? 15 runs given up in the first inning in the last 11 games, counting this one? This is just ridiculous. There's NO excuse for this. Pole needs to be out in the unemployment line.

Does Pole get credit for us having the 3rd best relief pitchers in the NL?

It's not Dick Pole. It's Arroyo and Harang having horrible years combined with WK thinking Josh Fogg or Matt Belise could be our 5th starter.
