    Sooo....What Happens With Owings Now?

Hope there is no objection to a seperate thread about this as it's really more of a question about this process rather than a specific inquiry about Micah Owings.

So...Owings is confirmed to be a part of the deal sending Dunn to ARI in a post-waiver trade. Dunn clears and is sent immediately. Obviously we now know the other players involved had to clear waivers as well. From what we've been told, Leatherpants put in a claim on Owings and therefore blocked him from immediately moving to Cincy and, as I understand it, he now has to wait until the season concludes to come here.

Here's what I don't understand. What does Owings (or a player in a similar circumstance) do for the rest of the year? Furthermore, who pays him? Can he play for the 'Backs AAA team at all? What motivation do they have to take care of him? Does he simply have to sit out and rot the rest of the year? This is just a strange, strange situation. Freaking Leatherpants.

Owings is not officially traded. He was pulled off waivers by AZ. He is still their player, but he has been promised to Cincy. He is the player to be named and he will be named as soon as possible. It would be possible, as someone mentioned in another section, that the Reds request that he is DL'd for the rest of the year so his shoulder is not hurt any further.

He will be a Red when its possible and that seems to be after the season.

If his shoulder is sore, shut him down for the year and have him ready for spring training '09. Compete for #4-5 starter and pinch hitter.

What you meant to say was "So one month of Adam Dunn was traded for....", right?

    Because that is pretty nice.

Arizona wouldn't part with any good prospects for Raul Ibanez from Seattle... That is why they called Cincinnati, and um, oh yeah... ARIZONA needed a Left Handed Power Bat... They Needed one... The Reds should have just kept Dunner until right before the end of this deadline and got some better talent... But anyway... All the Reds players aren't worth anything....

    So you're right... Not really...

Well, what you meant to say was, "So one month of Adam Dunn and 2 comp picks were traded for . . .", right?

Guys..this thread wasn't meant to be a referendum on the Dunn return (which I thought was incredible, btw). Just a question about this part of the waiver process.

That makes sense but this whole thing just reeks. The Backs and Reds both know Owings will be in Cincy next year but he has to play out the string in ARI. I understand that we can request he be DL'd for the remainder of the season, which would be fine with me and really is the only situation that makes any sense. Otherwise, several conflicts of interest arise.

Thats not how "this deadline" works. Once a player that is put on waivers is claimed by a team, the two teams have 48 hours to agree on a trade. If the team that put the player on waivers doesnt want to trade him to that team they cant put him back on waivers for 30 days. Technically, they can put him on waivers again but this time if a team claims him, that team gets him outright. In other words the claiming team doesnt have to trade for that player. See the Randy Myers case in the late 90's. So if the Reds didnt work out a trade with Arizona, they couldnt wait til closer to the deadline to get better talent. All they could have done is waited until later in the month to have exposed him to waivers but then a team would be trading for only a month of Dunn's service which would have brought even less back IMO.
