Sorry if already posted in another thread. From the Tallahassee Democrat today:
About 52 hours shy of the deadline for major league clubs to sign their draft choices, the 35th-round pick in the MLB June draft informed Martin of his decision. His signing bonus is expected to be around $250,000.
“Certainly this is a big blow to our club,” Martin said 20 minutes after talking with Fairel. “We just lost our No. 1 pitcher. I talked to Matt and it’s done, he’s gone. He’s signing. Two days before deadline. No way are we going to be able to find a player to replace him at this point.
“Cincinnati had some money to work with and they are giving him fourth-round money as a 35th-round draft choice. No way did I dream that Matt Fairel was going to sign.”
The lefthander emerged as FSU's top pitcher in 2008 with a 12-2 record and 3.79 ERA. He struck out 100 opposing batters.
Although Fairel was just a sophomore last season, he was eligible for the draft because his birthday fell within MLB draft-eligibility rules.
