    Another late-rounder, Matt Fairel, signs

Sorry if already posted in another thread. From the Tallahassee Democrat today:

About 52 hours shy of the deadline for major league clubs to sign their draft choices, the 35th-round pick in the MLB June draft informed Martin of his decision. His signing bonus is expected to be around $250,000.

“Certainly this is a big blow to our club,” Martin said 20 minutes after talking with Fairel. “We just lost our No. 1 pitcher. I talked to Matt and it’s done, he’s gone. He’s signing. Two days before deadline. No way are we going to be able to find a player to replace him at this point.

“Cincinnati had some money to work with and they are giving him fourth-round money as a 35th-round draft choice. No way did I dream that Matt Fairel was going to sign.”

The lefthander emerged as FSU's top pitcher in 2008 with a 12-2 record and 3.79 ERA. He struck out 100 opposing batters.

Although Fairel was just a sophomore last season, he was eligible for the draft because his birthday fell within MLB draft-eligibility rules.
Reading comprehension is not just an ability, it's a choice

    Alonso is definitely not signing.

That is a great signing. I didn't think the Reds had a shot. That coach sounded pretty damn bitter. LOL!!

Sounds like the Reds got a lot of good pitchers.

Yea, I think the Reds realized that have no chance with Alonso and are beginning to spread his bonus out to other players. Get Pfisterer and Bandilla signed and don't let the door hit ya in the backside Yonder.

    Nice job.

It's only fair. UF loses one, so FSU's gotta lose one.

Wow. Fairel and Sulbaran. That is really unusual and exciting, too. The backend of this draft may end up much better than the front end.

Wow. I never expected him to sign. That's surprising to hear. It's beginning to look more and more likely that Yonder Alonso will not sign. That's a shame, the Reds could use a big bat like that.

. . . or maybe the money saved on Dunn and Griffey is going to draft picks. That would be nice.

Now we really know why Matt chose to leave FSU, outside of the fact he got paid...his hero, Buster Posey left

    Take a look...

If the red's have decided Yonder isn't signing I love that there stepping up and signing the late rd reach a dream guys who they would have thought would never sign! they are using the cash and getting talent that is all that matters. Plus the reds get slot compensation on yonder in next draft. Castellini disappointed me in dropping Wayne K but he is getting back in my good graces with these steal late rd moves.
    2006 Redzone mock Draftee's- 1(st) Daniel Bard(redsox), 1(st sup)( Jordan Walden (Angels), 2(nd) rd.- Zach Britton(Orioles), 3(rd) Blair Erickson(Cardinals), 3(rd) Tim Norton( Yankees),(cuz its a Tim Hortons thing

Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.

That could be money saved in the Griffey or Dunn deals -- not necessarily coming out of the allocation for Alonso. Though my gut says the same thing...
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Re: Another late-rounder, Matt Fairel, signs

Reds bottom fishing for lefties, any lefties at all-- none picked in top 12 rounds, but picked and signed ones late in draft: rounds 13, 19, 34, 35, 41 and 43.

out of top 12 picks in three drafts, only Travis Webb (a no. 8 pick) and Drew Bowman (a no. 5) were selected. Two lefties in 36 picks.

    Results: no lefties in organization
