    Runs Above Replacement

I took a look at the NL offenses and how many guys with more than 100 plate appearances for the season produced at least double-digit RAR. That is, they produced more runs than a replacement level (read: scrub) guy at their position in the same number of outs. For the official definition here Higher numbers mean more runs scored.

It's just another way of looking at offensive production.

No suprise, but the Cubs are the winner with a staggering 10 players with 100 or more PA's and double-digit RAR's. Just plain sick. Also of interest, notice that the lowest OBP is .349 and most are .360ish or higher.
    Code:
    # YEAR NAME PA EqA OBP SLG RAR
    1. 2008 Derrek Lee 588 .281 .361 .469 30.6
    2. 2008 Ryan Theriot 558 .268 .394 .369 20.5
    3. 2008 Aramis Ramirez 545 .299 .383 .515 39.1
    4. 2008 Kosuke Fukudome 523 .266 .365 .392 18.7
    5. 2008 Mark Derosa 507 .294 .383 .487 33.5
    6. 2008 Geovany Soto 487 .291 .368 .509 31.2
    7. 2008 Alfonso Soriano 390 .294 .349 .545 27.2
    8. 2008 Reed Johnson 315 .278 .370 .453 15.5
    9. 2008 Jim Edmonds 243 .308 .379 .581 20.7
    10.2008 Mike Fontenot 230 .297 .379 .518 16.2
Also not suprisingly, our hapless Reds have a whopping 3 guys with double digit RAR's. Equally obvious that the woefull OPB tops out at .354.

    Code:
    # YEAR NAME PA EqA OBP SLG RAR
    1. 2008 Brandon Phillips 557 .263 .311 .456 19.8
    2. 2008 Edwin Encarnacion 481 .273 .333 .468 21.5
    4. 2008 Joey Votto 461 .276 .354 .456 22.1
St Louis has 7 guys 10 or higher RAR's and lowest OBP of .342.
Houstan has 6 guys and the lowest OBP is .301 (with a close second at .316)
Milwaukee has 5 guys and lowest OBP of .318
Pittsburg has 4 guys with the lowest OBP comming in at .325

    -------------------------------------------------------

With the usual tip of the hat to the "Mr. Obvious alert" this data continues to point out the monumental task that Walt has ahead of him.

It also tells me that it's going to take a heck of a lot of "speed and defense" to overcome "utter and complete lack of offense".

Paul Daugherty said tonight that the Reds need more smallball, and that they needed to learn how to do it. One caller suggested that trading Dunn and Griffey was the reason for the recent downturn in the offense. Daugherty didn't say he was wrong, but sidestepped the conversation, because he knows how dumb he looks about his post trade comments.
Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.

The Reds do need more small ball. Isn't the first step in small ball 'Get em on'? Well the Reds need that one big time.

Thanks for sharing the work you've done above.

Also, while the disparity in the number of players for the Reds and Cubs that fit your criteria is striking, it's also kind of striking that the three Reds who managed to make the cut would actually be at the bottom of the list of Cubs who made the cut.

I noticed that. It glares out at you. Truth is, our best pales in comparison to the other teams' best. All of our "go to" guys, Phillips, Votto, Encarnacion, and Bruce, are hitting near the .250 line (with the notable exception of Votto), and while Phillips is a defensive magician, the ohers aren't quite there. To take a twist on the old campaign line, it's the talent, stupid. It's plain to see (to me anyway) that Dunn and even an aging Griffey were the class of this team when it came to offensive powress. The rest are just pretenders for now.

It's a depressing definition of the Reds season. The Cubs have platoon players giving them the same advantage as the guys giving the Reds their best positional advantage this year.

I think George Grande once said, "Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in". I'll have to pay better attention should he ever mention this line again, and get back with you doug
